Dante's Journey
The route runs mostly away from paved roads, along trails, dirt roads, and ancient “ridge-top” paths of Etruscan-Roman origin, passing through villages, forests, and the landscapes of the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines.
The starting point of the Trail is Dante’s Tomb in Ravenna, the city where the poet spent the last years of his life and died in 1321. From here, the route continues to Florence and the Casa di Dante Museum, passing through numerous sites linked to Dante’s exile and areas described in various passages of the Divine Comedy, before returning to Ravenna to complete the loop.
The trail passes through very diverse environments and landscapes, from the Ravenna plain to the hills and mountains of the Apennines, all the way to the forests of the Casentino. Given the route’s length and terrain, it is best tackled in multiple stages, planning the journey according to your fitness level and the condition of the trails.
The Dante Trail is part of the Emilia-Romagna Pilgrimage Routes and Trails network and connects to other major routes along the way, including the Via Romea Germanica and the Assisi Trail.
