Challenging mountain route from Ettal via Ochsensitz and Zieglspitz to the Notkarspitze (1889 m) and a steep descent to the Ettaler Mühle guesthouse.
The start is directly in front of the Benedictine Monastery in Ettal or at the Ettaler Sattel hiking parking lot.
After his safe return home, Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian founded the monastery in 1330 at this scenically charming location. Centuries later, King Ludwig II. also admired the special location of the place and built his Linderhof Castle just a few kilometers away in the Graswang Valley.
After a short ascent to the Ochsensitz, you can better understand the motives of the royal tenant farmers. Breathtaking views of the Ammergau Alps, the Ester Mountains, and the Wetterstein accompany you on the path along the ridge over the Zieglspitz to the destination - the Notkarspitze. Locals simply call it "Not":
From here, it goes down into a cirque and along a path on steep switchbacks into the valley. Once at the bottom, stopping at the Ettaler Mühle is worthwhile. After a refreshing drink and Bavarian specialties, you are back at the starting point in 20 minutes.
Author’s recommendation
After the route, a detour to the Ettal Show Cheese Dairy is worthwhile. Be sure to try the fire or beer cheese here, made from local milk.

Roadbook
From the parking lot at Ettal Monastery, walk along the main road past the Ludwig der Bayer Monastery Hotel and turn right into the first street, the Notalmweg.
Hiking south, you cross a short meadow section towards the mountain forest. Here begins the trail up to the Ochsensitz, from where many switchbacks lead steeply uphill through the forest. From Ochsensitz, the route continues always along the ridge over the Zieglspitz to the Notkarspitze. The entire stretch offers stunning views of the Karwendel, Wetterstein, and the Ammergau Alps.
The descent from the Notkarspitze goes north down to the Großkaralm. Over steep switchbacks, the path soon leads downhill into the valley. Once at the bottom, the path runs along the forest edge back to Ettal and the starting point.
