With the Kieserlbahn, it goes leisurely up to 1,954 m to the mountain station. From there, the route first leads to the Arltörl, the deepest cut between Großarl and Dorfgastein, which was formerly used as a trade route. The hike continues to the Wetterkreuz at Aukopf and then it becomes a bit steeper uphill to the Schuhflicker, which is one of three limestone mountains in the Großarl valley. According to legend, two shoemakers were once turned to stone there because they preferred to spend Sunday morning on the mountain rather than attending mass. This legend also explains the two prominent peaks that form the Schuhflicker. The front of these two peaks, the Arlspitze, is a popular destination for climbers who find numerous routes here. From the summit of the Schuhflicker, there is a picturesque view of the idyllic Schuhflicker lake. After a break at the summit, the route descends to the Aualm, where you are treated by the alpine herders with homemade delicacies from their own farm.
