The Hallan cycling route runs between the Ukkohalla tourist center and Suomussalmi town center. The route mainly follows well-maintained gravel roads but also detours at times onto smaller forest trails. Along the route, there are several interesting sights, such as Hallan Ukko's tar and turpentine factory and the Hallan Ukko memorial, as well as several well-maintained rest stops. The route mainly follows gravel roads on the Hyrynsalmi side. Upon reaching Suomussalmi, the route soon moves to the beautiful Emäjoki river scenery, occasionally passing forest trails before reaching the vicinity of the Aittokoski power station. From Aittokoski forward, the route continues through pleasant heathland scenery utilizing ski trail bases. The route arrives at the Kiannon Kuohut spa in Suomussalmi.

The route is not technically challenging and is also suitable for those new to mountain biking. The forest sections of the route are easy and can, if necessary, be omitted by using gravel roads instead.

    Roadbook

The route can be traveled in both directions. The route instructions start from Ukkohalla. The starting point of the Hallan cycling route is next to the parking area at Ukkohalla by Lake Syväjärvi near the hiking routes information board.

At the beginning of the route, travel east along Syväjärvi road. At the east end of the lake, before the ski bridge, turn right onto Pienenmäki road. Drive about 1.5 km on Pienenmäki road until the route forks; continue right along Pienenmäki road. Continue about 3 km on Pienenmäki road until reaching Puolangan road. Turn right here and continue on the main road about 2.4 km, then turn left onto Rehvelintie (gravel road). Continue about 8.3 km on Rehvelintie (note there are occasional side gravel roads, follow signs) until you reach a turning point at the end of the road. Turn right here onto a forest maintenance road. Follow this forest road uphill for about 1 km until you arrive at Kattilavaara kota (hut). From the kota, continue along the Hallan ski trail base. About 300 meters ahead, the route reaches a gravel road, which is crossed, and continue along the ski trail base (NOTE! On this section route markings are incomplete and the route may be difficult to notice in places; correction is planned for spring 2022, check your location with a map application). Travel about 2.4 km on the ski trail base until reaching a gravel road, turn left onto this gravel road. Travel about 700 meters until reaching Hallantie, and turn right onto it. Ride just over 5 km on Hallantie until the route turns left onto Karankavaarantie.

Ride about 11.5 km on Karankavaarantie before the next turn. The route then turns right towards the shore of the Emäjoki river. After about 1.5 km downhill section, the route reaches the river shore scenery, which continues about 2.5 km before turning right after the bridge toward the Airport's lean-to shelter. From the lean-to, continue along the Emäjoki river about 600 meters, then turn left and after about 200 meters the route turns right onto the UKK trail. The route continues on the UKK trail about 1.5 km until reaching a forest maintenance road. Turn left here toward the road turning place, and at the turning place the UKK trail continues right. The route continues on the UKK trail about 1 km until it reaches a small forest road, which leads back to the shore of the Emäjoki river. Turn left along the river and proceed along the gravel road about 1.8 km, then after a gravel pit turn right onto a ski trail base. Continue about 2 km along the ski trail base until arriving near the Aittokoski power plant.

Cross the road here and continue along the ski trail base towards Haverinen ski center. Travel about 3 km on the ski trail base, then turn left and proceed for 3 km on the illuminated ski trail base in the opposite direction towards Haverinen ski center. From the Haverinen ski center area, the route heads towards Ämmänsaari village, following ski trail signs: Ämmänsaari or Kiannon Kuohut. The final stretch runs along the ski trail base and ultimately the route arrives at the Kiannon Kuohut spa.

The route is marked in the terrain with mountain biking signs featuring a mountain biker icon on a brown background.
