For a long time, a green hunter roamed the entire Schönbuch region between Tübingen and Böblingen—but especially between Einsiedel, Walddorf, and Dettenhausen—terrifying people with all sorts of ghostly apparitions. He was called the “Ranzenpuffer.” Older people say that he was once a hunter on the Einsiedel and, because of his godless life, had to wander about as a ghost for many hundreds of years after his death, without ever finding rest.
The Ranzenpuffer usually announced his arrival with a terrifying roar and shriek, throwing pine cones around to frighten people. He took particular delight in roaring loudly into the ears of sleeping people, causing them to lose their hearing for weeks. The Ranzenpuffer also liked to transform himself into various animals to wreak havoc. Often, hunters would shoot at a hare but could never hit it—it was the Ranzenpuffer playing a prank. Or, after pulling off a successful prank, the Ranzenpuffer would run off grunting in the form of a pig.

Caution is advised when crossing the B464 to the Hofmeistersteige parking lot. We’ll be rewarded with the descent into the Schaichtal valley. Note: There’s also a hiking trail on the Hofmeister Trail; please be considerate. We now head toward Dettenhausen along the Schaich River. At the Schaichtal barbecue hut, we leave the valley path and begin the climb. The upper half of the climb follows the “Deponie Trail,” making it a bit easier. Passing through the “Schwarzer Hau” field and riding a short stretch on the bike path alongside the road, we approach a water reservoir. There, the uphill path presents a small obstacle: either push your bike up bravely or take a detour around it. Just a few meters further on, we reach the Eckberg Hut with its parking lot. Once again, we cross the B464 with due caution. Passing the “Stadtreitereiche” oak tree—with its park and barbecue area—the route continues along the “Eisenbachhain,” the oldest nature reserve in the Schönbuch Nature Park. The old beech trees—or what remains of them—have a unique and fascinating charm in every season. The route continues gently downhill through a small valley to the Jägersitzhütte, where the tour ends, and we take a short stretch of the same path back to the starting point at the Lindenallee parking lot.
There are several suitable starting points along the Ranzenpuffer Trail: the Lindenallee parking lot, the Hofmeistersteige parking lot, the Eckberg parking lot, and the Stadtreitereiche parking lot. Another good starting point for the Ranzenpuffer Trail is at the Dettenhausen sports complex.
