The Mosel Slate Route winds through a diverse and charming landscape—from the vineyards along the lovely Mosel River, through the volcanic landscape and the adjacent Volcano Park, all the way to the heights of the Eifel. The common thread linking all these landscapes is the local slate tradition, with the silky-shiny slate roofs lining both sides of the route.
This part of the Eifel is, after all, a center of the European slate industry. Slate has been quarried here since Roman times, and the term“Mosel Slate®”—first documented in 1588—is one of the very first brand names ever recorded. The term “Mosel Slate®” does not derive from its quarrying along the Moselle. The slate mined in the Eifel was shipped via Moselle ports such as Klotten to neighboring countries and was thus known as“slate from the Moselle”—hence the name. The history of slate mining can be explored in Mayen at the German Slate Mine beneath Genovevaburg Castle. Mayen is home to the headquarters of Rathscheck Schiefer. The company is one of the world’s leading slate producers.
