Die Fachwerkidylle Monreals wird von zwei Burgruinen überragt: der Philipsburg und der Löwenburg. Die zu Beginn des 13. Jahrhunderts von den Virneburger Grafen gegründete Löwenburg diente einst dem Schutz der Stadt. Trotz der Zerstörung der Burg im Zuge des 30-jährigen Krieges konnten noch große Teile der Burg erhalten werden, wie die Überreste des markanten Bergfrieds mit 25 Meter hohen und drei Meter dicken Wänden. Die Ruine ist frei zugänglich und kann jederzeit besichtigt werden.
