Das Mayener Grubenfeld

Das Mayener Grubenfeld in der Nähe der Stadt Mayen in der östlichen Vulkaneifel ist ein ehemaliges Abbaugebiet für vulkanisches Basaltgestein. Von der Zeit vor über 7000 Jahren bis in die 1970er Jahre wurde das poröse Gestein zur Herstellung von Reib- und Mühlsteinen abgebaut. Heute hat die Vegetation die alten Steinbrüche zurückerobert und bieten zahlreichen, teilweise bedrohten, Pflanzen- und Tierarten einen Lebensraum.
Das Grubenfeld stellt die 8. Station der Deutschen Vulkanstraße dar.
