Montemerano: long path

The route takes its name from one of the most beautiful medieval towns of Tuscany. Montemerano was founded during the barbarian raids under the rule of the Baschi dynasty, making it one of the most important centers of the Albegna valley. The trail is suitable for mountain bikers, hikers, and horse riding, and is divided into three lengths: short (7km), medium (10km) and long (19km). The trail starts at the parking lot on via dell'Ospedale in Montemerano (adjacent to the old town). Follow via E. Fermi, via del Bivio and then take the local road of Saragiolo. At the bottom of the hill turn left and after about two kilometers you reach the road to Pianetti. Turn right after 100 meters, turn right again and then go into the woods for 1,5 km before reaching Poderi di Montemerano. Once there, the path divides: the trail on the right finishes after 20 minutes; continuing straight past SP.159 and then turning left leads towards the medium and long paths. After about three kilometers (almost all of which is a steep ascent), the trail splits again: the trail on the right takes about 30 minutes to complete, while the left hand trail leads to the long course. This final route crosses a large agricultural area with numerous farms along the way. On the way back to the end of the trail, visitors can admire the Albegna river valley from the 'Le Volte'. The route back to the beginning leads to the point where it previously split into the middle and long paths. This route allows visitors to visit all of the points of interest outlined in the guide.
