“The opportunity to enjoy a magnificent landscape in calm and silence, to leave habits and all comfort behind, carrying only the essentials on your back, and to immerse yourself in the simplicity and mindfulness of being.”
- Pilgrimage is more than hiking: it is a journey inward – to oneself. We immerse ourselves in the lovely landscape of the Southern Wine Route and the Palatinate Forest. The Chapel Pilgrimage trail touches churches and chapels that invite quiet and contemplation, crossing graceful landscapes between deep forest and sea of vines! We enjoy wonderful views, delight in castles and towers extending into nearby France (Alsace). Pastor Unkrich, the initiator of this mindfulness path, sees this as liberation for the pilgrim who is put back in touch with themselves. “Simply enjoy the silence, smell the forest, and discover your personal oasis! When nothing else works – then go!”.
Experience the special features of the Bad Bergzabern region on the 76.4 km-long Chapel Pilgrimage route: the sea of vines that captivates, the Palatinate Forest that brings calm, and the chapels that invite contemplation.
The path can be walked in several stages. From Bad Bergzabern to Klingenmünster, you start in the spa park at the St. James Pilgrim statue. Continue through Pleisweiler-Oberhofen with the Catholic Church to Gleiszellen-Gleishorbach to the Dionysius Chapel. In Klingenmünster, you reach the Klingenmünster Monastery and the memorial for euthanasia victims at the Palatinate Clinic via a marked circular path.
Another stage from Klingenmünster to Vorderweidenthal leads over the Karlsplatz Hut to Abtskopf and then further to the Lindelbrunn castle ruins in Vorderweidenthal. A detour to the Peace Chapel in Birkenhördt is worthwhile in between.
The stage from Vorderweidenthal to Schweigen-Rechtenbach goes via Lauterschwan, Seehof, Hirzeck-House through the Mundat Forest to St. Germanshof to the Europe Memorial and then along the border via Pauliner Castle to the German Wine Gate.
The final stage from Schweigen-Rechtenbach back to Bad Bergzabern goes over the Guttenberg ruins, the Stäffelsberg Tower, the Kolmerberg Chapel, the fortified church in Dörrenbach, past the Böhämmer House back into the spa park and the South Palatinate Thermal Baths.
Looking for a way to decelerate? The Chapel Pilgrimage route offers a refuge for all those who want to retreat from everyday life and provides a good alternative to the Way of St. James.

General information:
Particularly in autumn, note that fallen leaves can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes on the path. After thunderstorms or rain, trees may fall or branches drop afterward. Especially under adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is sometimes required. You must expect path impairments like these when hiking. If you believe certain path sections are impassable for you, you should avoid these.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work or hunting parties on this platform. However, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we were perhaps not informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a path closure or detour, please observe the notices for your own safety.

Roadbook
Stage 1 Bad Bergzabern - Klingenmünster
You start in the spa park at the St. James Pilgrim statue. A detour through the spa park is worthwhile to the baptismal church of Saint Edith Stein - the St. Martin Church. Continue on the path past the Protestant Market Church to the impressive Mountain Church. From the Mountain Church, you reach the ascending path to the Liebfrauenberg Monastery, enjoy the uplifting panoramic views, and then proceed to the two churches in Pleisweiler-Oberhofen. On the hill above Gleiszellen, you will see the Dionysius Chapel, and then the path leads you to Klingenmünster. There you can take a detour to the Klingenmünster Monastery complex. Afterwards, the climb to the Euthanasia Memorial at the Palatinate Clinic is worthwhile. From there, the signposted path continues to the Nikolaus Chapel.
Stage 2 Klingenmünster - Vorderweidenthal
From the Nikolaus Chapel, you can see Landeck Castle, which is reachable via a well-developed path. From there, you leave the sea of vines and enter the Palatinate Forest, where you can perceive the diversity of nature. Let it affect you so you can gently and subtly feel yourself. Pause at the hut at Karlsplatz after climbing the 487m high Abtskopf. Between Abtskopf and the Lindelbrunn castle ruins, a detour to the Peace Chapel above Birkenhördt is highly recommended. The forest inn Cramerhaus invites you to refresh, eat, and stay overnight. From here, you can pass the Protestant youth center and take the ascent to the Lindelbrunn castle ruins to enjoy a very special panoramic view!
Stage 3 Vorderweidenthal - Schweigen-Rechtenbach
In Vorderweidenthal, the former St. Gallus Church can be discovered. From there, you pilgrim through the Erlenbach valley to Oberschlettenbach and discover the fire station, which used to be a church. From this gem of tranquility, your path leads toward Lauterschwan along the Potzbach. In Lauterschwan, you will encounter the St. Michael’s Chapel. Below Berwartstein Castle, which you can already see from afar, everyone can refresh themselves at the Seehof Pond. Refreshed, you follow the signposting into the Palatinate Forest to the 400 m high Breitenberg. Passing the Hirzeck House and the Bobenthaler Head, you head to the former St. Paul Weißenburg Monastery, the St. Germanshof. You continue along this path toward the Pauliner Castle. The view extends as far as the German Wine Gate, the southern starting point of the German Wine Route.
Stage 4 Schweigen-Rechtenbach - Bad Bergzabern
From Schweigen, you go along the edge of the Haardt back into the Palatinate Forest to the Hohenstaufen Reichsburg Guttenberg. Only the bergfried remains of the ruin. From the highest point of the path, you look over the Mundat Forest and the Rhine Plain. You also have a great view from the Stäffelsberg Tower before heading to the Kolmerberg Chapel. The chapel is a popular pilgrimage site, and the former hermit's dwelling today serves as an overnight accommodation for groups. In Dörrenbach, you must visit the fortified church of St. Martin, a simultaneous church from 1684/85. The oldest part, the lower choir room, dates from around 1300. In Bad Bergzabern, there are three churches: the Market Church, Mountain Church, and the St. Martin's Church, baptismal church of the canonized Edith Stein.
