King and Alps - here in the castle park they belong together: a majestic backdrop that inspired the fairy tale king Ludwig II and showcases the castles and fortresses impressively. The start and end point of the 121-kilometer route is the romantic old town of Füssen with its medieval alleys and baroque churches. It goes above wild rivers, through forests, over wide meadows to quiet lakes, cozy alp pastures and villages as well as historical places. The magnificent mountain panorama accompanies you until you climb it yourself and look at the royal landscape from above like an eagle. Almost at the end of the route, the castle of castles, Neuschwanstein, then looms as a reward on a rock!

    Safety information

    Schlosspark tips for your route:

The Allgäuer Königsalpenroute passes in some stages through the middle to high elevations of the Allgäu Alps. Alpine experience and sure-footedness are absolutely necessary. You should also expect exposed, slippery, and fall-hazardous as well as unsecured walking passages over rugged terrain with loose scree and even snowfields in midsummer. You should be sure-footed and free from dizziness.

For your safety, there are fixed ropes in some places. Some sections also require more endurance due to simple climbing passages where you may have to use your hands. Step aids are installed in some passages. Pay attention to the color coding of the trail categories on the signposts. These notes only apply to the stages in the mountains.

Provisions: Bring enough water to drink. A snack tastes especially good on the way.

Weather check: It’s best to check various services and ask locals familiar with the mountains because rain or thunderstorms can come quickly in the mountains.

Companionship: You shouldn’t undertake a longer tour alone, even if it seems easy and harmless. Always leave your tour destination at your accommodation.

Ascent: Ascend slowly but steadily to protect your body. Running untrained into the mountains risks injuries or mountain rescue operations. Avoid hiking on unknown mountain paths at night.

Emergency: Be a helper in accidents! Get help at the nearest alpine hut or contact the mountain rescue service.

Emergency signal: Give six signals of waving, calling, or flashing per minute, then pause for one minute.

    Stage: Füssen – Pfronten

At the Tourist Information Füssen at Kaiser-Maximilian-Platz, the hike to Pfronten starts at the start and welcome square. Through Reichenstraße (pedestrian zone), you walk straight towards the High Castle and St. Mang Monastery. At the end of Reichenstraße with the distinctive city fountain, initially keep left and then immediately right into Magnusplatz street, which leads directly to St. Mang parish church and the park-like tree garden. A bridge crosses the street leading tightly through the rock to the Bad Faulenbach district. A few meters later, at the fork and then the next T-junction, turn right each time and hike along the lower Kobelweg above Füssen. After about 1.3 km, turn left at a T-junction and after almost 150 m turn right onto a path again. After about 450 m, keep right again to follow the trail at a sharp angle. The route leads through mixed forest via Hahnenkopfweg to a power cable corridor. Just before the power lines, first keep right, then left again to continue immediately right to the Zweiseenblick viewpoint. Via a descending path, you reach Alatsee, which is circled clockwise. After passing a meadow and some benches, a steep ascent to Salober Alm follows. The alm is already in Austria; the route continues along the border first over a gently ascending meadow path. After about 500 m, at a fork, turn left to a meadow. Shortly after, at a junction, keep left, then ascend and unknowingly cross the border to Germany again. Now, follow a natural path to the highest point of the ascent. Before the descent, stunning distant views of the Ammer Mountains, Zugspitze, as well as Breitenberg and Aggenstein fascinate. The descent ends shortly before the access road to Falkenstein castle ruins. From here, hike first on an easy path to a Marian grotto, from which a path goes steeply downhill. As soon as the path meets a trail, on the right is an ascending piece of path to Hotel Schlossanger Alp. Immediately before the hotel, turn left, then soon right on a short path, and at its end, turn left again on a forest trail. Along meadows, reach a barn and an intersection where you turn left. About 100 m further, keep left again and hike into the Burgweg of Pfronten district Meilingen. Along Neuer Weg street, walk to the church, descend some steps, cross the Faule Ache stream and circle a playground. A path leads through a small forest, then hike along the river Vils on Drosselweg to the railway tracks. Here you cross the Vils and go right over Jagdhausweg to Tiroler Straße. Follow signs to the right to the town center, pass the spa park, and cross the Vils again. After about 150 m, the Tourist Information on Vilstalstraße is reached.

    Stage: Pfronten – Nesselwang

From the start and welcome square at the Tourist Information, start the hike to Nesselwang. From Vilstalstraße, turn left into Am Angerbach street and at the next but one junction, turn into Buchbrunnenweg. This path leads out of the town to a cemetery, then to a T-junction where you follow the path left. Pass a hospital site to the southern outskirts of Röfleuten. Here, go straight from Haldener Kirchweg into Edelsbergweg and turn right after about 100 m to Sonnenlift. A short ascent follows to Rißbach, where you change right onto an asphalt road. Sometimes near the forest edge, sometimes in the forest, cross seven streams in the next approx. 1.4 km. From the asphalt path, turn left onto a field path. Just after crossing the fourth stream, follow a path at the crossroads and pass several hay barns – one with a small hay museum. After about 70 m, follow the marking right at a fork, descend slightly and keep left toward Pfronten district Kappel. Along the town edge is a forest rope park at the end. A short steep ascent on an asphalt road leads to a forest trail. Ascending further but more gently, hike alongside Steinbach, cross it, and pass a waterfall on the rocky-rooty path. Here, the trail leaves the brook course and goes a short stretch through forest. Once some meadows are reached, the ascent steepens. On the way to Alpspitze, pass Kappeler Alp and reach Kappelköpfl with Alpspitzbahn mountain station. The approx. 3 km long path to Nesselwang descends parallel to Alpspitzbahn through the forest. Soon, Schlossbach joins the route; the middle station of the mountain railway and the top station of Stellenbichllift pass. Past Kronenhütte and Untere Alpe, reach Nesselburg ruins and shortly a waterfall where Schlossbach plunges down. Having reached the forest edge, cross the brook and turn left toward Alpspitzbahn valley station. The route continues along An der Riese street to the main street and St. Andreas Church. Right of the church, walk into Von-Linge-Strasse and turn right at Gasthof Post into Lindenstrasse. Immediately keep left again into Poststraße and follow a pedestrian path through the spa park to the adjacent train station.

    Stage: Nesselwang – Seeg

Start at the station, keep left, and walk through the adjacent spa park to Mühlbach. Follow the footpath along Mühlbach to a crossing where you first turn left into Lärchenstraße, then immediately keep left again. After a few meters, cross the tracks and follow a field path straight ahead. At a junction, cross a stream straight into Nesselwang district Rindegg. Pass Holy Trinity Chapel, keep right, and follow the path to Rindegger Tanne parking lot. Here, the path bends right, just after turn left onto a gravel path. The path leads to a forest edge, follow it to the right. Shortly after, cross a narrow forest area to again follow the field path along open areas. Another forest section follows, at the end of which you reach the shore of Kögelweiher. The hike turns left on the shore path and after the pond to a sharp left turnoff. On this, hike about 1 km to the next sharp right turn. Continue through open meadows to a T-junction. Turn right on the wide gravel path and at the next crossroads left to the forest edge. Pass a farm and cross motorway A 7 to another farm. The route continues on the field path opposite the farm. Shortly before Neuweiher, keep right, pass a small pond and the soon following youth campsite to a driveway. Turn right here and immediately left to a chapel. Approach Schwaltenweiher, whose southern shore is circled after turning off near a barn. Shortly before Schwalten Seehotel, reach a street which you follow a few steps toward the hotel, then turn right into a street to the hamlet Seeleuten. In Seeleuten, switch left on a forest path and hike later on a meadow path along a ski slope to Nesselwanger Straße in Seeg. Immediately turn left into Hauptstraße and after about 100 m turn right to Kurgartenpark. At a small pond, Königsalpen-Route turns right toward Roßhaupten. Straight ahead, the path leads into Wiesleutener Straße that you follow left to Bahnhofstraße. Right leads only a few meters to Seeg train station.

    Stage: Seeg – Roßhaupten

Start this stage of Logenplatz-Route directly at Seeg station. With the station behind, go left to nearby Bahnhofstraße. Turn right here and immediately left again into Wiesleutener Straße to a small chapel, behind which the Kurgarten path turns right. At a junction at a small pond, follow the route left, cross Senkeleweg, and leave Seeg on Am Felbersteig street. Reach a street that you briefly follow left and then branch left onto a field path. Pass settlements Felben and Zeil to a street you cross and follow steadily to a farm. Here, walk about 100 m left to a street you follow right for about 100 m. Just before a hiking parking lot, turn left onto the field path used as a hiking trail to Beichelsteinalpe. After passing farm Goimenen, after almost a kilometer turn off to Beichelsteinalpe access road. The route continues straight to Senkele viewpoint, then into a forest with Senkele Alpe and further to Drei-Schlösser-Blick viewpoint. After a kilometer, reach a junction where turn sharply right. Follow forest path about 400 m, then shortly before forest edge take a left turnoff. After about 600 m keep right to reach the next forest path. On this, turn left to a T-junction. After turning right, follow the path steadily through the forest to Zwieselberg viewpoint. Then follows a steep descent. After a few hairpin bends, follow trail to the right. Shortly after, a descending path leads steeply down again to a nearby trail, where turn right. About 400 m later hold left, then about 500 m later again right on a descending path. At the end of the descent meet a street and a parking lot. Along the street walk left, soon turn right into the forest to a Marian grotto, then left on a stations path to forest edge. Turn left onto the local path and walk with Kobusstraße and Seeger Straße to St. Andreas Church in the center of Roßhaupten.

Stage: Roßhaupten – Lechbruck am See

This stage of the Logenplatz-Route begins in the center of Roßhaupten at St. Andreas Church. Along Seeger Straße go to the junction to Kobusstraße, which later becomes a gravel road. At the forest edge keep right on a stations path leading to a Marian grotto. Follow the stations path through the forest, pass Kalvarienberg, Kobus viewpoint, and turn left on the next crossing path along a ski slope. Pass St. Andreas Chapel and through a forest crossing a path. Past Tiefental Chapel, cross federal road 16 and reach a narrow bay of Forggensee. Along the lakeshore hike about one kilometer to Mangmühle. On the access road, go to a left curve, where you turn right again to the lakeshore. After another kilometer along Forggensee, reach a street that you cross left to some houses. After a small wood, arrive at more houses of Tiefenbruck settlement. Walk through the settlement and on a field path northward, pass farm Gurremarren and later Nepfenhof. After these farms, you reach Schmuddenweiher, where you follow the shore about 1.1 km. The path leaves the shore and for about 200 m goes between meadows to a forest edge. Here, a path turns sharply left, which is followed along the forest to a narrow access road. Turn right to farm Oberschlicht, then into a forest where shortly after turn right on a path. Cross Höllbächl, then turn right after the forest to a house and follow the path to hamlet Helmenstein and along Helmensteiner Straße left to a dam that forms Premer Lechsee from the river Lech. From here, Königsalpen-Route follows the dam to Halblech. Arriving at Lechbruck am See, before the dam turn left along the entire lake side. The lake narrows until the hike continues at Lech river shore. Reach Helmensteiner Straße, turn right, and follow to Flößerstraße. Here keep left and at a junction turn right into Schongauer Straße entering the center of Lechbruck am See.

Stage: Lechbruck am See – Halblech

From the town center follow Schongauer Straße to the branching Flößerstraße. Follow this to just before Lech bridge, then turn right into Helmensteiner Straße. After about 800 m take a path left to Lech river shore. The hike leads along the river which soon dams up as a lake. Continue to the dam overlain by Königsalp-Route. Turn right for about 2 km along the dam crest. After a birdwatching station, the gravel path encounters a district road where you turn right and pass settlement Küchele. Shortly after, cross the river Halblech. The hike leads left to a farm, then reach settlement Ostern and follow the lane to just before the next farmstead. The path reaches a forest, then at the next fork turn left and descend to Halblech. The river sets direction for about 4.5 km; the goal is Kenzenhütte parking at the edge of Halblech.

    Stage: Halblech – Kenzenhütte

Kenzenhütte parking is located at Halblech outskirts, where the stage uphill to Kenzenhütte starts. Opposite the street follow the path uphill through a forest. After about 600 m, at a junction, turn right, cross two closely adjacent clearings, and follow the gently ascending path. Once the slope steepens, the path forks at a small clearing offering wide views to the Alpine foreland and Forggensee. The now steep path leads into a ravine crossing Bärengraben brook. Then follows a descent on a rocky trail. At the next junction, keep left. After passing a wooden hut, follow a gravel road and hike slightly downhill. When the path bends right, meet Röthenbach brook and accompany it to its confluence with Lainbach. Cross a bridge and hike on an asphalt path parallel to Halblech brook to the confluence of Reiselsbergbach (later called Lobentalbach). Crossing Reiselsbergbach, leave Halblech valley, reach Reiselsberghütte shelter, and continuously follow the brook. Several small hydro plants and two reservoirs pass. Shortly after the second reservoir, turn left following Bockstallbach brook to another reservoir. The route passes a dam, then along the lake shore and crosses a bridge toward Wankerfleck. From this high valley with a chapel, hike along Kenzenbach brook, cross a bridge for the last time, and ascend on a path past a mountain rescue hut and forester's house to nearby Kenzenhütte.

    Stage: Kenzenhütte – Tegelberghaus/Schwangau

Starting at Kenzenhütte, follow the clear path right to a junction. Here turn right and pass a small forest before quickly ascending steeply on a path over meadow slopes to Kenzensattel. Below Hochplatte, walk straight and comfortably to Oberer Gumpen, looking into Gumpenkar and Hochplatte. At the fork here, continue left into a hollow with a view to the “Fensterl.” Now keep right and soon walk through dwarf pines. Below Gumpenkarspitze, walk a bit between dwarf pines before ascending about 240 m through a scree field to Gabelschrofensattel. From the saddle, descend steeply in switchbacks before the path continues left above a scree slope along rocks. A short descent follows, then continue left through dwarf pines. Another short descent follows with a tight right curve, then walk about 250 m at a forest edge and pass a gate toward Tegelberg. After crossing Lobentalbach brook, ascend toward Straußbergköpfl. Cross a small scree field and reach Ahornsattel. Walk below Ahornspitze through a forest. After the forest, descend slightly to junction Branderfleck, continuing straight toward Tegelberg. Initially fairly flat, the path ascends gradually, passes a hut, and reaches Tegelberghaus and Tegelbergbahn mountain station as stage goal.

    Stage: Tegelberghaus/Schwangau – Füssen

Attention: Marienbrücke is currently closed. Please follow the detour signposted with Steinmännle of the Allgäuer Wandertrilogie.

From Tegelberghaus, walk past the cable car station and descend several steps with a left curve to the forest edge. After crossing the steel cables of Tegelbergbahn, follow the route into the forest and shortly after pass the source of Reitbach. With gentle gradient, the path leads past Tegelbergkopf. When near some distinctive rocks, keep right and descend steeply in many switchbacks. At the end of the gradient section, reach Pöllatschlucht gorge with Marienbrücke. The hike leads over the bridge to a shelter at the shuttle bus stop. Here, a wide gravel path branches off which you follow downhill to Neuschwansteinstraße. Now keep left, walk into adjacent Hohenschwangau village, and hike to Alpsee lake. Follow Fürstenstraße ascending through the forest, walk along the lake and at the junction near a possible detour to Hohenschwangau Castle, turn right onto gravel path (Alpenrosenweg). At the following T-junction, turn left and after about 50 m keep half-left. Follow the path steadily until after about 2 km a fork is reached. At this fork, leave Alpenrosenweg and turn right toward Füssen. After about 150 m, cross a path, then after about 200 m turn right and immediately left again. After another 100 m, leave the path and ascend a right-branching gravel road. After passing a forestry hut, turn onto a path to Kalvarienberg. From Kalvarienberg, follow the Stationsweg downhill, pass Hirschwiese with chapel, cross a path, pass an obelisk, and descend the Stationsweg to Frau-am-Berg Church. Along the local federal road, first walk right, cross the Lech River, and follow Lechhalde and turning right Reichenstraße pedestrian zone to the start and welcome square directly in front of the Tourist Information at Kaiser-Maximilian-Platz.

    Equipment

With good, well-broken-in hiking shoes, you’ll be safe and blister-free. For clothing, layering is key: a short and a long shirt (cotton dries poorly, so better wool or special sportswear), zip-off pants, sweater, jacket, and rain cape. Also include change of clothes, headwear, sunglasses, sunscreen, first aid kit, and flashlight in your backpack.
