Passing the Presseggersee, we ride on the Carnic Cycle Path to Nötsch, to then roll down via Bad Bleiberg to Warmbad Villach. The Alpe-Adria Cycle Path takes us to Arnoldstein.
Welcome to the 15th stage of the Central Cycle Route of the Way of the Book, the Protestant themed route that follows old trade routes, where German-language Bibles were smuggled in the 17th and 18th centuries, leading from north to south through Austria's most beautiful holiday regions. It connects Protestant parishes and towns as well as tourist regions in five Austrian federal states.
The Presseggersee brings us gently downhill along the Gail River to Nötsch. From there we climb steeply to Bad Bleiberg to the Terra Mystika show mine and the Protestant church. From the Holy Spirit Church, we roll down to Warmbad Villach. From the Gail, we cycle upstream and turn uphill to Arnoldstein to the monastery ruins and the Protestant church in Agoritschach.
The Way of the Book is a project of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Austria and reveals an unknown piece of its history.

Roadbook
Hermagor (602 m) “Carnic Cycle Hiking Path” – Presseggen (569 m) – Nötsch (569 m) – Bad Bleiberg (928 m) – Warmbad Villach (500 m) “Warmbaderweg” – Arnoldstein (578 m) – Agoritschach (683 m).
At the roundabout near Hermagor train station, we join the familiar R3 and follow it past Presseggersee to Nötsch (25 km). Then we climb 360 meters up to Bad Bleiberg, admiring the witnesses of mining history.
Then, willingly yielding to gravity, we roll down to Warmbad Villach. You can take the L35 state road to Fellach or, when a crossing gate is open near the village of Heiligengeist, use the right goods road. Via Pogöriach, Goritschach, Möltschach, Judendorf and Warmbad Villach, we descend to the Gail (do not cross the bridge), where we meet an old acquaintance again, the Carnic Cycle Path (R3), into which we turn right. Along the motorway and the Gail, we cycle leisurely to the power plant, cross the Gail here, and arrive at the Almgasthof Schütt. From here, we turn left over the Nepomuk bridge to Arnoldstein. From here, we tackle the last section of our cycling tour, beginning with the ascent after passing through Arnoldstein to Agoritschach as the crowning glory of our tour.
Content after the completed 818 km cycling route and 10,900 meters of elevation gain, we lean back with outstretched legs at the inn in Agoritschach and enjoy the view of the Protestant church. (Get the key from Ms. Fertala).

In the interest of environmentally conscious and climate-friendly cycling, we recommend arriving by public transport.Coordinates
Equipment
- Documents and papers: passport, bank card, e-card, cash, emergency numbers, map and route description, writing utensils, flashlight, ballpoint pen, ticket, mobile phone with power bank, GPS device, camera.
- A trekking bike would suffice: detachable panniers, luggage approx. 10-12 kg, cycling shoes, cycling helmet, rainwear, sun protection, sunglasses, yellow safety vest.
- First aid kit: personal medication, adhesive tape, aluminum foil blanket, tablets, foot cream, overshoes for feet to keep shoes dry.
- Provisioning: at least 2 liters of water per day, pocket knife with multiple functions, small snack, muesli bars, glucose tablets, fruit.
For multi-day routes
- Clothing: 1 pair of cycling shorts (short) and 1 long, 1 pair of evening trousers, 2 vests, 3 pairs of socks, 3 underpants, 3 shirts/blouses or tops, nightwear, swimwear, flip flops for evenings, gloves, hat covering ears, scarf, sleeping bag liner for mountain huts.
- Toiletries: in hand luggage size; sunscreen, shower gel, toothpaste, toothbrush, small towel, nail clipper, tweezers, safety pins, comb, tissues, toilet paper.
Tip: Choose cycling clothing with winter conditions in mind, even in summer.
