Pilgrimage - MTB E 2 Arnoldstein - Gemona
One of the most spectacular stages is the Alpine-Adriatic cycle path from Tarvis to Grado. It was built on the route of a railway and uses bridges as well as tunnels.
The approach from Arnoldstein is somewhat arduous, all the more beautiful when at Tarvis, at the Austrian-Italian border, the Alpine-Adriatic cycle path meets the most demanding demands for variety and adventure. Tarvis alone is worth a break, afterwards the eye can hardly get enough of the accompaniment of the Carnic Alps in their most beautiful form. The fact that the railway line gently descends supporting the fast ride must be mentioned just as much as the scary tunnels, often barely or insufficiently lit, and the dizzying bridges. The rapidly changing picture of the furious landscape - no wonder that numerous bikers of all ages ride this destination and a certain caution seems advisable.
Author’s recommendation
If possible, always eat and take breaks between 12 and 3 pm (Italy), it pays off later.

In Arnoldstein, follow the federal road towards Italy (border). Directly at the border control, there is a sign on the right - westward - steeply going up a cycle path. Now in constant ups and downs, a stream without a bridge is crossed, the church of Coccau comes into view, here too we continue uphill until we reach the official cycle path that runs directly below the church of Tarvis. This section is not correctly shown on the map. After Tarvis, continue rather gently uphill until Camporosso where the railway line descends and the bike covers kilometers at a rapid speed. About 15 tunnels have to be passed through, each sparsely lit (except 2). A strong bike light helps here, also a model that switches itself on and off automatically is an advantage. The railway bridges are well developed as cycle paths, the deep views are mostly somewhat scary. The surroundings are beautiful, since little power is needed for the bike, there is time to enjoy the ride. The perfectly developed long-distance cycle path cannot be missed. Passing through Pontebba follows the federal road, then steeply right down, a stop in Venzone promises lots of culture again - immediately after Venzone, a great pizzeria invites you to eat. The Hotel Willi in Gemona lies on the northeastern edge and allows seamless continuation the next day. The visit to Gemona is 3 km away, the town was completely destroyed in 1976 (earthquake) and wonderfully rebuilt.
