Safety information
General information:
Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or rainstorms, trees can still fall or branches can break off. In adverse weather conditions, natural paths may have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or ravines are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in some places. You should expect such path impairments when hiking. If you consider certain sections not passable, you should avoid them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work or hunting societies on this platform. However, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or detour, please follow the instructions for your own safety.
Tips and suggestions
St. Remigius
The landscape center of the Glan valley is the Remigiusberg between Altenglan and Theisbergstegen with castle ruins and church. The Remigius Church was once the religious center of the Benedictine provostry of St. Remigi Remigiusberg first documented in 1127, a branch monastery of the abbey St. Remy near Reims. From the original Romanesque three-aisled pillar basilica, which was Gothicized in the 14th century and largely destroyed during the French Revolution, only a part of the nave, a side chapel, and the bell tower remain. The monastery was dissolved during the Reformation in 1550 and came into the possession of the Counts of Palatinate-Veldenz, who used it as a court church and created a family crypt under the choir. Remains of the former monastery buildings can be found under the sacristy and the rooms of the guesthouse. The boundary wall of the garden terrace consists of remains of the southern monastery wing.

Michelsburg Ruin
Separated by a mountain cut, the ruin of Michelsburg rises on the Remigiusberg east opposite the church. Its origin is closely connected with the building of the monastery: the monks bought the once illegally built castle and used the stones as building material for their purposes. Later the Counts of Veldenz rebuilt the castle. Preserved are the 20m high shield wall, remains of the former palace, the ring wall, and the neck ditch.
