Millstatt Gorge Trail
Varied 1,000 meters of elevation lead directly from the lake through the Millstätter Gorge to the staffed Schwaiger hut on the Millstätter Alm.
Along the path in the gorge area, unique plants can be found such as the spotted orchid, which is a protected native orchid species. Sure-footedness and suitable footwear are prerequisites for hiking the gorge trail. Especially on hot summer days, the ascent through the gorge is a refreshing and cooling alternative to the hiking trails on the Millstätter Alm. For the return route, a ride with the Nockmobil is recommended (see section Arrival).
ATTENTION: Please stay on the hiking route described here (!) and observe the current partial closures and detours of the gorge trail.

Proper behavior in the mountains:
- Careful route planning based on descriptions and hiking maps is essential for a successful mountain tour.
- Equally important is correctly assessing the mountain experience, fitness, sure-footedness, fear of heights, and resilience of all participants.
- Never leave marked hiking trails and avoid shortcuts.
- Inform yourself about the weather conditions before the hike and return to the valley if the weather worsens.
- The mountains are for everyone. Helping to preserve and keep them clean is the duty of every hiker. Waste should be taken down to the valley; flora and fauna should be protected.
- Always keep dogs under control and on a short leash. If an attack by a grazing animal is foreseeable, the dog must be immediately unleashed.
- Austrian farmers make an important contribution to preserving our alpine landscape. We ask you as a visitor to respectfully adapt to this beautiful landscape.
- Show respect to the people working here, to nature, and to the animals.
Here are the most important emergency numbers in case of an accident in Austria:
- 140 Alpine emergency
- 144 Rescue emergency
- 112 European emergency number (possible from all networks. Turn off the mobile phone and dial “112” instead of the PIN upon turning on)
Tips and suggestions
Further information about the hiking area of the region can be found at www.millstaettersee.at/wandern.
Roadbook
The hike starts directly in the town center of Millstatt. Alternatively, various entry points (e.g. in Obermillstatt) can also be chosen. From Millstatt, follow Aribostraße to the congress center/municipal office. At the market fountain, turn left into Kalverienbergstraße. After a few meters, you reach the fork Kleindombra/Großdombra/Obermillstatt. Here is the entry to the Millstätter Gorge Trail (trail no. 193) along the Riegerbach stream. First, you must cross the bridge (car road) and after the yellow house, the forest path with steps begins. After about 1 km, the gorge trail crosses the Obermillstatt state road. The gorge trail now follows an old mountain path somewhat to the west of the stream going uphill (trail no. 36 A). After 2.6 km you cross the gorge and switch to the other side of the stream until you meet trail no. 1917. Follow this trail, which passes by the Herzog Hut and leads back into the gorge. Once back in the gorge, there is an ascent to the Hochrindl spring. Here the gorge trail meets the Millstätter Alm road, which you must follow for about 400 meters until an old mountain path branches off at a curve and leads the last 200 meters of elevation to the Schwaiger hut.
From here, you have the option to start the return trip with the Nockmobil (see section Arrival) or to return to the lake via the circular route “From the plateau to the Alm.”
Important: In the gorge, sure-footedness is sometimes required and due to moisture, slip-resistant hiking shoes are necessary.
ATTENTION: Please stay on the hiking route described here (!) and observe the current partial closures and detours of the gorge trail. Due to past storms, numerous bridges are at risk of collapse.
