The Wild Netzbach Trail offers a swamp landscape in the Netzbach valley and diverse forest scenes that bring forth different types of vegetation in every season.

Attention: in some sections, walking the route can be made difficult by fallen trees in the primeval forest area.

Close to the state capital Saarbrücken, the "primeval forest at the gates of the city" has been growing for about 20 years in the nature reserve and green heart of the Saar coal forest. Commercial use of the raw material wood is forgone here, so nature can develop in its own unique way. Uprooted trees, marshy swamp landscapes, peculiar creek courses, and small forest lakes are part of the former mining landscape program, as well as small mining heaps that are reclaimed by gnarled oaks.

    Attention:

Entering the forest and walking on the trails is always at your own risk!

Seasonal and weather conditions require increased sure-footedness on some trail sections. Please wear clothing and hiking boots with appropriate soles adapted to the season and weather. Be cautious of breaking branches and damaged trees. In strong winds and in winter due to snow and ice, the risk of falling trees and dropping crown parts increases.

    Roadbook

At the large hiking parking lot at Scheune Neuhaus (on the L259, Forsthaus Neuhaus exit), we hike north along the yellow-marked access path. After crossing the country road, we enter the primeval forest at the gates of the city. At the first fork, we follow the Wild Netzbach Trail on the right. On the forest path, we continue to the next intersection, keep right, and follow the narrowing trail gently downhill. After about 400 m, we turn right onto a winding path leading through small valleys. The rock formation, called Holzer conglomerate, on both sides of the path surprises with embedded pebbles. We turn left off the paved forest path and walk under graceful beech and oak trees, whose high canopy offers wide forest views. After a short distance, we reach the Netzbach pond (on the right) and the Rosen pond (on the left). The impressive Netzbach valley – once crossed by miners and pit workers – is ascended along a narrow path. The dynamics of the creek change this section’s appearance with every season; fallen beeches demand sure-footedness and a bit of adventure from visitors. Small seating areas on the fallen beeches invite you to rest. After crossing the Netzbach bridge, we come to the tranquil Hortenbach pond. From there, we proceed on a narrow route between beeches – later over moss and under young spruces – uphill. The following bright birch forest in the historical Wolfsgarten – a former forestry from the 18th century – with its ferns and mosses evokes the impression of a fairy-tale forest. We complete the circular route on the soft forest floor and reach the first fork, which leads back to the access path to Scheune Neuhaus.
