The ascent to Veľký Choč is among the most interesting but more demanding routes in the region. It is mainly sought after because of the beautiful panoramic views from its summit.
The route is among the more demanding ones, especially due to large elevation gains over short sections. The terrain is diverse, from muddy sections and rocky parts, through forest paths to asphalt road. Some more demanding parts are secured with steel chains, and in some places, you need to use your hands to hold onto trees, rocks, or mountain pine.
The route is located in the Chočské vrchy mountain range, with Veľký Choč as its highest peak. The route passes through the Chočské vrchy bird protection area and the Choč National Nature Reserve. In the forest, behave so as not to disturb its inhabitants, do not damage anything, do not pick plants, and leave nothing in the forest. For collectors, a tourist sticker for Veľký Choč, Lúčanský waterfall, Lúčky Spa, and Lúčanské travertines is available at the Ružomberok Information Centre. Magnets of the Lúčanský waterfall are also available.

Roadbook
The route starts in Valašská Dubová at the tourist signpost next to the bus stop "Valašská Dubová, OCÚ". Following the blue trail along the wood carving of a brigand uphill between houses, the road splits and we turn towards a rocky cliff behind the village. We continue on a paved road among trees and bushes to a meadow. Below the forest is an educational panel about the "Forest" and to the right of it a shelter with seating. After entering the forest, the route becomes steeper. After a short climb, we reach a shelter with seating and a spring with water. Here the surface changes to gravelly and rocky, leading us to an imaginary rock gate, formed by rocks on both sides of the path, from where the ascent becomes even steeper. The path continues straight steeply up to an educational panel about "Fauna." The route here eases, then climbs steeply again leading to meadows where you will find an educational panel about "Flora." Another important point on the route is the signpost – Stredná Poľana, where you can enjoy the views. We turn onto a green trail along the edge of a mountain meadow and then right onto the summer route. By a forest path, we gain the altitude needed to reach the summit. When we exit the forest onto sloping meadows, which lead us to mountain pine scrub. The climb through the mountain pine is short but rocky and gravelly. A little distance from the summit, our route joins the red tourist trail, which we continue on to the summit and later beyond. The tourist signpost sticking out from under the rock welcomes us at the summit of Veľký Choč. However, we continue a few meters further right to the summit itself, where there is a viewpoint rose, which helps us identify the surrounding hills, and a summit book where we can sign in. The reward for completing the ascent is a beautiful panoramic view in all directions. Veľká Fatra, Malá Fatra, Chočské vrchy, Low Tatras, Western Tatras, High Tatras, Oravská Magura, Orava, Liptov, and many more can be seen from the summit in good weather.
