Tips and suggestions
Do you want to take a photo that makes it look like you are flying over the lake without lifting your feet off the ground? You can do that on Monte Altissimo di Nago. In front of the Rifugio Damiano Chiesa, go left, one last stretch westward, and before you opens the entire Lake Garda from north to south. On clear days, you will be breathless seeing the lake in all its splendor from Torbole to Sirmione, the Gardesan Prealps, the Monte Baldo ridge, the Ledro valley, the Val di Gresta, and the Brenta Dolomites, to name just a few.
This is exactly how we recharge: sitting silently on the meadow and observing the wonders of Mother Nature!
You can visit the remains of the Austrian defensive works from the First World War and the small church near the shelter hut or enjoy the bloom of rare and endemic species that have earned Monte Baldo the name Hortus Europae since 1400.
Roadbook
If you leave the car in Prati di Nago, you reach the barrier marking the start of the wide forest road called SAT 601, which gradually narrows towards the meadows of Monte Varagna. Keep right, bypass the remains of the Austrian defensive works and prepare for the final ascent. This leads between stones and rocks with a view of the lake for about 2 kilometers to below the Damiano Chiesa hut and further right from the hut to the summit of Monte Altissimo.
The return is via the same path.
Variant
At the beginning of route 601, instead of following the forest road, you can take well-marked detours to shorten the ascent. But watch out for mountain bikers coming down these narrow paths!

Equipment
As with any mountain route, it is advisable to start early in the morning to enjoy the ascent in cooler weather. Definitely don’t forget your hat and sunscreen, but also a sweatshirt. A few clouds and some wind are enough to quickly remind you that you are at 2000 meters altitude.
There are no fountains along the path, so bring the necessary water from home!
Occasionally, locals also go up Altissimo late in the afternoon after work, calmly enjoy the sunset from up there, and return for dinner at the hut. If you want to experience this, remember to bring your headlamp for the descent.
