Trade (Excursion into the Past)
An important pillar of the Roman economy was trade, which spanned the entire Roman Empire and ensured that even in Augusta Raurica figs from Egypt could be eaten and wine from Spain drunk. But numerous products were also produced and traded within the colonia itself.

We begin our hike at the right Rhine bank in Wyhlen, where after a short walk we reach the intersection of Rheinstrasse and railway track. The path leads to the Augst-Wyhlen power plant. We cross the river at the power plant and then turn left to reach the Ergolz estuary. From there we continue up to the main street of Augst and from there to the industrial complex in Schmidmatt.
We walk back a bit on the main street and follow Giebenacherstrasse uphill until we reach the Forum after the scenic theater on the left side of the street. Before the bridge over the motorway, we turn left. We are now at the edge of the town; 1800 years ago, we would have strolled here through a residential and artisan quarter.
Our route now leads us to the Roman domestic animal park. If we continue along the street, we pass a protective structure on the left side of the street. We can end the route here and follow the Violenbach to the Kaiseraugst train station.
However, those who want to undertake an extended, perhaps even multi-day hike, can set out from here on the way to Mumpf. Another ten Roman miles further, merchants traveling east from Augusta Raurica first reached a larger town: in Roman times, today's Frick was a small town (vicus). From the vicus in Frick, one could reach Vindonissa (today's Windisch) via the Bözberg, which in the 1st century AD was an important legion camp. Coin finds show that the traffic connection over the Jura Pass was probably already used in Roman times. Upon arrival in Vindonissa, we end this tour of a traveling merchant.
