Thirasia Trail 4 - Manolas - Kera (Monastery of the Dormition of Virgin Mary)
Take this route to the SE edge of the island to find beautiful chapels and ruins before reaching the abandoned Monastery "tis Keras"
This route connects the settlement of Manolas with the Monastery of Kera which is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin. The route starts at the settlement of Manolas and follows the main road of the settlement in a southerly direction. The route soon enters an uphill cement road and successively approaches 3 beautiful chapels, each with its own courtyard, posing as welcoming rest spots to tired hikers. The concrete road is abandoned at some time, to move in a slightly eastern direction on a dirt road that gives way to a path, which climbs towards the imposing church of Prophitis Ilias on top of a hill that stands atop the wider area. Here in the courtyard of the church and next to some buildings associated with the celebration of the church's nameday, the hiker will be able to see the Monastery of Kera on the edge of the island, as well as the ruins interspersed in the space in between. In this next section one moves according to the ruins that attract his interest, as long as they keep the Monastery of Kera as a bearing. The route will eventually lead the hikers to the dirt road that ends at the Monastery of Kera with no sign of trail before that. The end of this route brings the hiker to a special monument of this region with panoramic views of this edge of the island. The route is accessible, although improvements in its passability and markings would be useful.

Tips and suggestions
Since the route leaves the hiker at this faraway place, one should probably either call for the taxi to pick them up, or keep in mind the 2.8 km long dirt road that brings them back to Manolas in approximately 45 minutes. Returning from the same route is also an option.

Access to the island is from Santorini. The distance is short and the Santorini - Thirasia route takes from approximately 10 to 45 minutes depending on the ferry and the port of departure.
There are 3 different ways to get to Thirassia:
From Athinios (Santorini's main port): This is the only way to get to Thirassia bringing along your car. One can take the local ferry or the Seajets liner (Andros Jet). The routes run several times a week.
From Ammoudi (port of Oia): The distance from Ammoudi to the port of Riva is the closest between Santorini and Thirasia. A local boat makes daily routes to Riva and Corfos.
From the old port of Fira (Mesa Gialos): To get from here to Thirassia you should contact one of the tourist agencies of Fira that organize excursions to the islands around Santorini.
