Die niederbayerische Stadt Straubing blickt zurück auf eine lange und bewegte Geschichte, die noch heute in der historischen Altstadt spührbar ist.
Kelten siedelten hier, Römer unterhielten ein Kastell zur Sicherung der Donaugrenze, die Wittelsbacher gründeten 1218 die Stadt neu. Hier bezog der bayerische Herzog zwischen den mächtigen Städten Regensburg und Passau Position.Von 1353 bis 1425 war Straubing Teil des Herzogtums Niederbayern – Straubing-Holland. Der Stadtplatz in Straubing wird vom 66 m hohen Stadtturm (14. Jh.) dominiert; gegenüber symbolisiert das beeindruckende Rathaus bürgerliche Präsenz. Sein Dachstuhl wurde bei einem Brand im Dezember 2016 schwer in Mitleidenschaft gezogen. Herzogliche Macht demonstriert das Herzogsschloss. Hier finden vor historischer Kulisse alle vier Jahre die Agnes-Bernauer-Festspiele statt. 200 Straubinger spielen die tragische Geschichte der Augsburger Baderstochter Agnes Bernauer, die sich 1432 in den Sohn des Bayernherzogs verliebt und die nicht standesgemäße Ehe mit dem Tode bezahlt.
