The route from Sombor to Apatin, passing through the riverside village of Kupusina, unfolds across one of the most distinctive cultural and historical landscapes of the Bačka region. The trail follows the Danube’s broad floodplain, where fertile fields, river meadows, and quiet backwaters shape a landscape that has supported fishing and agriculture for centuries. Kupusina itself—a village with a strong Hungarian community—sits at the heart of this mosaic, and the path between Kupusina and Apatin crosses a strip of land that is formally part of Croatia, but the river that once marked the demarcation has shifted its course. The walk moves from Sombor’s elegant Habsburg-era avenues into open countryside, then toward Apatin’s long Danube embankment, where the Sultans Trail river once again meets the river.

Leaving Sombor, the trail follows the road to Kupusina, but just after the road bridge crossing the Bačka Canal, it turns away from the road. A field road leads through the flat agricultural landscape toward Kupusina. We pass through the settlement and leave it on a track lined with orchards, which brings us to a bridge over the Danube–Tisa–Danube Canal. After crossing, we turn left and continue along a field road that briefly runs through formal Croatian territory before re-entering Serbia (no border controls). After crossing the Mirni Dunav branch, a field road leads toward Apatin and joins the former railway line approaching the town.
