This route is a stage of Section ST2 of the Sultans Trail, an international long-distance hiking trail from Vienna to Istanbul. The hiking route follows historic roads through eight countries (Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey), linking towns and villages in a traditional cultural and historic landscape.

This stage passes Kishegy, Györistiván, before reaching Gönyu.

The stage from Győr to Gönyű begins by leaving the historic riverside city and moving eastward through the gentle outskirts shaped by the meeting of the Danube, Rába, and Rábca. As the trail heads toward Kishegy, the landscape opens into flat agricultural fields and quiet farm roads, with distant views of low ridges and the industrial edges of Győr fading into the distance. Continuing through Győrszentiván, once a separate village and now a suburban district. Beyond the houses, the scenery becomes increasingly rural again, with long straight tracks leading toward the Danube levee. The final approach to Gönyű follows the river corridor, where the broad Danube flows past reed beds, gravel shores, and the working port of this riverside village. This stage blends suburban calm, open farmland, and the steady presence of the Danube, guiding the walker toward one of the river’s characteristic Hungarian port towns.

    Roadbook

Leaving Győr, the trail follows the Mosoni-Danube as it leaves the town at the point where several rivers meet. The riverbank soon gives way to open ground beyond the industrial outskirts and the suburb of Győrszentiván. Beyond the last houses, the landscape opens, and nature gradually reclaims its presence. The trail enters the Hungarian puszta. The stage ends at Gönyű, a riverside settlement with a harbour on the Danube, where vessels continue the long-established river traffic between Vienna and Budapest.
