Schneeberg-Neustädtel mining educational trail
Everything comes from mining! – This motto is deeply rooted in the mining town of Schneeberg. Enjoy nature, geology, history, and world heritage all at once!
Unusually rich silver finds led to the founding of the mining town Schneeberg starting in 1471. After the decline of silver mining, the high-yield cobalt ore deposits gained worldwide importance from the 16th century onward. From the 16th to the 19th century, the Schneeberg district was the largest and most important source of cobalt ores worldwide. The popular cobalt blue obtained from the ore was used on ceramics, porcelain, and in glass design. The lovingly decorated Baroque buildings are also witnesses of this time.
From the time of historic mining in Schneeberg, especially many valuable historical artifacts have been preserved in Neustädtel. Already in 1978, the unique landscape shaped by mining was placed under monument protection. Since July 6, 2019, the Schneeberg mining landscape has also been part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Ore Mountain Mining Region/Krušnohoří."

Roadbook
The route starts at the Technical Museum "Siebenschlehener Pochwerk." Follow the educational trail signs or markings toward the Gesellschaft mine (FG). Via Sonnenwirbel and through Hüttengrund, you reach the Sauschwart mine with a wonderful view over the mining town. From there, you can already see the impressive heaps of the Schindlerschacht shaft and the FG Daniel. Enjoy the panoramic view of the mining town Schneeberg here. Then the path leads past FG Siebenschlehen to the Filzteich beach, along the main art ditch, and after crossing the B169 to FG Wolfgangmaßen. From there, you return via the Hohe Gebirge to the starting point in the Neustädtel district. Finally, a detour to FG Weißer Hirsch is worthwhile.
The mining educational trail is marked for orientation with its own waymark (crossed hammer and pick in green on white background).
