The impressive Montclair Castle, a ride with the only ferry in Saarland over the Saar, the breathtakingly quiet Steinbachtal, and the most famous panoramic view of Germany's most beautiful river bend from the Cloef are highlights of a dreamlike hike through quiet forest passages with surprising views. The path over the edge above the Saar offers picturesque views into the Saartal.

Over the ridge surrounded by the Saar, the path leads through the forest to the spur and to Montclair Castle. Montclair Castle, first mentioned in records in 1168, was one of Germany's most impressive castles and was considered impregnable. In 1351, however, it was captured after a long siege and then demolished.

The bank of the Saar below the castle is part of the Saarschleife landscape park.

The ferry “Welles” can be summoned with a bell. The only ferry in Saarland safely brings hikers and cyclists to the other side of the Saar.

In the Steinbachtal nature reserve, the trail runs over many wooden bridges and numerous steps. It continuously ascends. The foliage of the trees barely lets sunlight into the narrow gorge. Thick moss grows on massive rock formations and on the surrounding deadwood. It is breathtakingly quiet in the valley.

The view from the Cloef viewpoint of Germany’s most beautiful river bend is especially impressive from the platform of the treetop walkway.

The path back to Mettlach leads over stone rushing water and rocky terrain to several viewpoints with picturesque views into the Saartal and the forested ridge with Montclair Castle.

The path has been rated with 82 experience points by the German Hiking Institute.

    Ferry operating times:
April to October: daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
    Monday closed
If Monday is a holiday, the rest day moves to Tuesday.
November and March: weekend operation only

    Closed from December to February.

    Attention:

Entering the forest and walking on the trails is fundamentally at your own risk!

Seasonally or weather-dependent, increased surefootedness is required on some path sections. Therefore, wear clothing and hiking boots appropriate to the season and weather with suitable soles. Attention is necessary due to breaking branches and damaged trees. The risk of falling trees and falling crown parts increases with stronger winds and in winter due to snow and ice.

    Roadbook

From the starting point, the Parish Church of St. Lutwinus in Mettlach, the path leads past the church through Gangolfer Street and Prälat-Koll-Weg and then left past the cemetery uphill until we meet a well-developed forest path. First, it goes uphill and then along the ridge to Montclair Castle, which offers an opportunity for visits and refreshments. In switchbacks, follow the marking down to the Saarschleife – here the Saar has carved an impressive bend into the riverbed.
A ferry takes us to the other bank. You have to attract the ferryman's attention with a bell. Attention, from December to February the ferry is not in operation; in November and March only on weekends; year-round, there is no ferry service on Mondays!

Wooden bridges and stair steps make the following path through the nature-protected Steinbachtal a true hiking experience, and we continue uphill on sometimes steep paths to the Cloef viewpoint and enjoy an overwhelming view of the Saarschleife from above.
Here on the steep side of the river bend, our route runs on varied paths and leads us past a shelter, over the Weselbach, and through the Wellesbachtal. The paths remain narrow and steep, rock balcony after rock balcony lines up on the return journey to Mettlach. There, it goes first over the bridge and then through the pedestrian zone back to our starting point at the church.
