Die Cloef ist ein felsiger Aussichtspunkt im Scheitel der Saarschleife, dort, wo eine vorspringende Felsformation aus Taunusquarzit sich bis zur Saar hinabzieht und in früherer Zeit ein Hindernis für die Schifffahrt darstellte. Über den Ursprung des Namens Cloef gibt es verschiedene Versionen, die zum Teil heftig diskutiert werden. Hauptsächlich zwei Deutungen werden favorisiert, für die beide eine Erklärungsgrundlage besteht.
Eine Version des mundartlich ausgesprochenen „Chef“ lautet: Es kommt aus dem Niederdeutschen und bedeutet so viel wie „Klippe“. Dies würde mit der Felsformation übereinstimmen, auf der die Cloefschutzhütte steht.
Eine andere Version leitet den Namen aus dem Keltischen ab, und danach würde es ein „steiniges Kerbtal“ bezeichnen. Einen Ort „Chef“, wie er im moselfränkischen Dialekt ausgesprochen wird, kommt auch im Luxemburgischen vor.
Es ist der Name der Stadt Clerf bzw. Clervaux im Ösling. Ähnlich wie an der Saarschleife hat sich dort das Flüsschen Clerv ins Gebirge geschnitten, wie in einem steinigen, felsigen Kerbtal.
