Mettlach ging aus einer um das Jahr 676 vom fränkischen Herzog Lutwinus - später Bischof von Trier - gegründeten Abtei hervor. das Kloster erhielt unter Abt Lioffin um 990 eine als Oktogon gebaute Marienkirche als Grabkirche für seinen Gründer. Dieser "Alte Turm" ist der älteste erhaltene Sakralbau im Saarland. Das heute zu sehende Abteigebäude wurde im 18. Jahrhundert erbaut. 1792 plünderten französische Revolutionsgruppen das Kloster, das in der Folge aufgelöst und 1794 säkularisiert wurde. 1809 kaufte Jean Francois Boch-Buschmann die Abteigebäude und richtete dort eine Keramikfabrik ein, die sich schnell zu einem Weltunternehmen entwickelte. Diese ehemalige Benediktinerabtei ist heute Sitz der Generaldirektion des Unternehmens Villeroy & Boch AG, dem Hauptwirtschaftssektor der Region. Ein Keramikmuseum und eine Multimediashow zeigen die Geschichte und Produkte des Mettlacher Unternehmens.
Eine vom Hl. Dionysius geweihte Kirche wurde früher als Mittelpunkt einer vorübergehenden Großpfarrei Mettlach erbaut. Anschließend folgte der Bau zweier weiterer Gotteshäuser als Mittelpunkt eines Klosters. In einer besonderen Blütezeit ab Mitte des zehnten Jahrhunderts entstand unter anderem eine weithin bekannte Klosterschule. Der nahe gelegene Bergrücken von Montclair mit den Ruinen der 1017 zerstörten Burg Skiva wurde in der zweiten Hälfte des zwölften Jahrhunderts Sitz der Vögte über Merzig-Saargau (und damit auch des Klosters Mettlach). Die Burganlage hatte eine Ausdehnung von ca. 850 m (1351 durch Erzbischof Baldium erobert und zerstört). Nach Jahrhunderten des Niederganges und immer wiederkehrender Kriegswirren ließ Abt Ferdinand de Koeler (1691-1734) durch den sächsischen Baumeister Christian Kretzschmar die Barockabtei (1727-1771) mit einer Frontlänge von 112 m erbauen, welche heute infolge der 1802 erfolgten Säkularisierung Sitz des weltbekannten Keramikunternehmens Villeroy & Boch ist.
