Easy circular hike high above the charming village of Tenno to the former hermitage San Pietro on the southern slope of Monte Calino. Fantastic views of the northern Lake Garda and Monte Baldo. Partly on old mule tracks and short road sections.

Our circular hike takes us through the two idyllic villages of Tenno and Canale, which offer a impressive insight into medieval life in this part of Trentino. The village of Canale was revived in the 1960s thanks to artistic and cultural initiatives, after being abandoned by its inhabitants and left to decay in the post-war years. With its closed row of houses, it looks quite forbidding from the outside, but once you enter through the gate you are captivated by the atmosphere: winding alleys, tightly packed houses, colorful frescoes over the doorways, saints in niches, lots of small art galleries. No wonder Canale is on the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy! The highlight of this hike is the atmospheric shelter (Rifugio San Pietro) built onto the former hermitage San Pietro at 976 m above sea level. The terrace invites you to linger and enjoy. This circular route is especially recommended in spring due to the pleasant temperatures and in autumn for the autumnal colors. Depending on the weather, visibility over Lake Garda may be somewhat limited. Partly steep ascents and descents on old traditional mule tracks.

    Tips and suggestions

Rifugio San Pietro is open year-round. Info +39 0464500647; www.rifugiosanpietro.eu. Tenno Castle is not open to the public. A visit to the church San Giovanni Battista in Calvola from the year 1537 is recommended.

    Roadbook

Ascent: Our route begins in Tenno just above Tenno Castle. At the bus stop or near the municipal pharmacy (Farmacia Comunale) we cross the state road SS 421 and turn into Via Gioacchino Prati. Then we cross the center of Tenno (signpost "Rif. M. Calino- San Pietro", Mark. No. 401). After about 300 m we turn right and follow a narrow alley to a small parking lot. At the end of the parking lot, turn right onto an asphalt access road passing well-maintained vineyards and olive groves (Mark. No. 480). After about 500 m we reach a fork and leave the paved road. We keep left (still marked No. 480) and follow the field path between old dry stone walls gently ascending to another fork (red-white marking). Attention! Not straight ahead! We continue left. Soon we leave the wire-fenced field and enter the bright scrub woodland. We follow a moderately steep mule track to a beautiful large clearing just below the road leading from the village of Calvola to Treni. In a few minutes we reach this asphalt access road (signpost Rancion 855 m). Turn right! Now we walk leisurely through woods until we reach the hamlet of Treni in half an hour. Shortly before the first houses, a steep and narrow path branches off (attention, easy to overlook!) leading over Monte Calino to Rifugio San Pietro (Marking No. 401). After a 20-minute, sweaty climb we reach the fully wooded ridge of Monte Calino. From there it is easy going with gentle undulations (path number 401) to the shelter, 976 m.

Descent: We leave Rifugio San Pietro on the access road (marking 406) towards the parking lot. 200 m before the parking lot we turn left; shortly afterwards, turn right. Always following the familiar marking No. 406, we walk through chestnut groves to the Bastiani house and follow old mule tracks through the beech forest down to the village of Canale. Through an archway we enter the medieval village. Our hiking trail does not lead us into the village center. We go left, again through an archway, leave the houses behind and walk leisurely to the hamlet of Calvola. Now it goes down to Tenno on an old paved mule track. We once again cross the village center and return to our starting point above Tenno Castle.
