RheinTerrassenWeg Worms - Mainz
The hike over the RheinTerrassenWeg from Worms to Mainz leads across a total of six stages. The route is suitable for culturally rich long-distance hiking as well as for varied short routes. World-famous vineyards, historically significant sights, and Rheinhessen wine enjoyment complete your experience on the RheinTerrassenWeg.
In the cathedral city of Worms, you initially use the access path to reach Herrnsheim, where the RheinTerrassenWeg begins at the impressive castle. At the start, you stroll through the magnificent landscape garden of the castle before hiking through extensive vineyards past Abenheim to Osthofen. Vineyards dominate the landscape throughout, with Bechtheim's basilica providing a welcome change. After Mettenheim, the landscape becomes hillier and more scenic. Particularly exciting in this region are the wild romantic sunken lanes carved into the soft loess soil.
In Guntersblum, a detour to the distinctive Heidenturm church is worthwhile, and in summer the famous Kellerweg festival is a "must" for all wine lovers. The route now leads entertainingly through vineyards and woodlands, with sunken lanes once again featuring in the RheinTerrassenWeg repertoire. Views of the Odenwald, Rhine plain, and Frankfurt skyline become ever more impressive. Hikers are magically drawn to the city panorama of Oppenheim, where the delicate Katharinenkirche and cellar labyrinth are worth a visit.
Passing the Landskron castle ruins, you head towards Nierstein with great views of the "Hiwwelland", where winding lanes provide the typical flair of Rheinhessen wine towns. At St. Kilian church, you come very close to the Rhine, and even at the passage along the famous Red Hang, the river is always clearly visible. Via Nackenheim and Bodenheim, you walk to Laubenheimer Höhe and beside the old Weisenau quarry down to the Rhine bank. You follow this up to Mainz city park where the RheinTerrassenWeg ends. An access path leads further to the Roman Theatre station, not far from Mainz's old town.

Roadbook
Stage Worms – Osthofen
From the Nibelungen city of Worms with the Cathedral of St. Peter and the oldest preserved Jewish cemetery in Europe, the access path runs through the Rhine plain to Herrnsheim, where the RheinTerrassenWeg begins at Herrnsheim Castle. After the magnificent castle park, the route goes through extensive agricultural areas. Fields and vineyards dominate the landscape. Near Abenheim, you pass the turnoff to the widely visible St. Michael's Chapel before the path leads through the seemingly endless vineyards towards Osthofen. After a short sunken lane section, the path ascends to the cemetery and continues to the impressive hill church. Then you descend through alleyways into the center of Osthofen, where the access path turns towards the nearby station.
Stage Osthofen – Bechtheim – Mettenheim
If you wish, you can start the day with a visit to the Osthofen concentration camp memorial. In the center of Osthofen, you encounter the RheinTerrassenWeg, which uses winding lanes to lead to the northern edge of town. Woodland surrounds the path until it opens into the open fields. After a gentle ascent, wide views open up over the sea of vineyards and soon Bechtheim comes into view. Here, not only the old fountains but especially the Romanesque basilica and numerous vintner estates, for which Bechtheim is also known, delight. Above the town, the path runs again through the vineyards, offering further views of Bechtheim and the Rhine plain. The route gently descends until just outside town the access path turns to Mettenheim. Passing the historic town hall and church, you reach the station.
Stage Mettenheim – Alsheim – Guntersblum
From Mettenheim station, the access path leads past the historic town hall into the vineyards to the RheinTerrassenWeg. From Goldberg, you enjoy magnificent panoramic views before reaching the Weißmühle with its idyllic rest area and fountain through sunken lanes. After a short ascent, impressive sunken lanes alternate with vineyards leading to Alsheim, where the distinctive Heidenturm church stands out. Two access paths connect the station, but the RheinTerrassenWeg only makes a short visit to the town and leads back into nature. Along the WeinAromaMeile and the sunken lane paradise with the impressive Krummsteig sunken lane, you reach Hangen-Wahlheim, where a detour to the church ruins invites. Through the vineyards, you reach the turnoff to Guntersblum. The access path to the station passes the Leininger castles.
Stage Guntersblum – Ludwigshöhe – Dienheim – Oppenheim
From Guntersblum station, the access path leads past the famous Kellerweg to the RheinTerrassenWeg. Along the hillside edge, beautiful views open up over Guntersblum with the distinctive Heidenturm church. From the Roman tower, you have a great view of the Odenwald before a magnificent sunken lane section leads to the Sassenbach valley. Its idyllic surroundings invite a break in the green. Further on, you hike with some ups and downs through extensive vineyards enjoying the view. Ludwigshöhe is connected by an access path, also Dienheim shortly after. From the Falkenberg hut, there is a magnificent view of Oppenheim with the spectacular Katharinenkirche. At the Oppenheim cemetery, you turn onto the access path into the historic old town, where a tour of the unique cellar labyrinth is worthwhile.
Stage Oppenheim – Nierstein – Nackenheim – Bodenheim
From Oppenheim station, passing the impressive marketplace, you reach the RheinTerrassenWeg at the town’s edge, which initially leads to the Landskron castle ruins. With great views of Schwabsburg with its striking castle tower, you reach Nierstein, pass the Martinskirche and the mighty St. Kilian church, and then sink again into the vineyards. Deep red soil characterizes the Red Hang, one of Germany’s most famous vineyard sites with the most beautiful wine view of Rheinhessen at Brudersberg. The hillside edge is quickly conquered, where more great viewpoints await. In Nackenheim, you climb steeply to St. Gereon church and then quickly return to the vineyards. Bodenheim comes into view, where the southern access path, passing the Maria Oberndorf pilgrimage chapel, leads directly to the station.
Stage Bodenheim – Mainz
The route starts in Bodenheim, where ancient manor houses impress just as much as the historic town hall or the Stiftswingert vineyard. The first half of the stage is characterized by the vast sea of vineyards and magnificent wide views over the Rhine valley towards the Odenwald. In clear weather, the Frankfurt skyline is visible on the horizon, which you can see particularly well from the Zöller Kreuz viewpoint on the Laubenheimer Höhe. The former Weisenau quarry offers great insights into earth history before the path follows the Rhine shore into Mainz. The RheinTerrassenWeg ends at the city park, while an access path continues to the Roman Theatre station, where the old Roman heritage is impressively displayed. You should not miss Mainz’s old town with the beautiful St. Martin's Cathedral.
