Zwischen Wald und Alb
On the RemsRosenstein hiking trail, we approach the "Blue Wall" of the Swabian Alb from the north initially with a moderate ascent, before it gets serious in Lautern. The serpentine path leads steeply uphill to the mighty caves "Große Scheuer" and "Haus." After another steep climb onto the plateau of Rosenstein, you are rewarded at several viewpoints with great views far into the land. The Archaeological Path on the Rosenstein, with informative display panels about the early settlement of the area, leads over to the ruin of Rosenstein Castle with a romantic view down to Heubach. Along the way, the "Waldschenke" offers an opportunity for refreshments. When descending to Heubach, a visit to the cave "Kleine Scheuer" is still worth a glance.
From the station in Mögglingen, the path initially leads to the town center along various garden exhibition areas such as Mühlbach, to the church, Micheleshaus, the Rems floodplain over the market square, and to the Lauter estuary. At the eastern edge of the town, we leave Mögglingen with a slight ascent towards Lautern. Soon a magnificent view opens up to our stage destination, the Rosenstein. In Lautern, the actual ascent begins. A steep narrow path leads to the Lautern Albverein hut. With a magnificent view into the Rems valley, we continue along the steep path to the "Große Scheuer." Through a 4-meter-high entrance facing southwest, one enters a mighty vault that gradually extends up to 7 meters high towards the east. East of the "Große Scheuer," about 150 meters away, is "das Haus," one of the best-researched caves of Rosenstein. You first reach it via a steep path downhill, then after a few switchbacks onto a level section before it becomes somewhat steeper uphill again directly to the pointed arch-shaped cave entrance, 6 meters wide and 9 meters high. Back via the "Große Scheuer," we climb the staircase and reach directly the side path (red fork) of the HW1, the Rosenstein ridge path. This ridge path has several beautiful viewpoints. Thus, you initially keep east (left) and arrive at the eastern rock, which you could already admire on the way from Mögglingen. After the beautiful view of the gardening village Lautern, Lauterburg, and Essingen, we head back west along the Alb-Traufgang, where 2 to 3 further viewpoints show the wonderful panorama to the north. Halfway along the ridge path, we encounter a stone structure that the people of Heubach know from legend as the "stone Agnes." Shortly thereafter, we reach the main hiking trail of the Swabian Alb Association, the HW1 (marked with a red triangle), which we continue to follow westward. On the way to the Waldschenke guesthouse, in the middle of the rising gravel road, it is possible to take a short detour to the Dreieingang cave, which lies about 150 meters down the slope to the left. Sure-footedness is absolutely necessary here. Returning, we reach the Waldschenke, which is always happy to welcome visitors. Those interested can also briefly visit the monument "Rock with Relief by Franz Keller," the first great chairman of the Northeast Alb Gau, located about 50 meters south of the Waldschenke at Sophienfelsen outside the nature reserve fence. Continuing towards the castle ruins, first to the Lärm rock, with a wonderful view of the Rems valley, then over the Rosenstein bridge (also called Lügenbrückle) to the Rosenstein castle ruins. After enjoying a magnificent view of Heubach, Scheuelberg, and the Rems valley, one reaches the "Kleine Scheuer," a cave structure which, during excavations in 2018, provided very valuable insights into the history of Rosenstein, and then follows the so-called zig-zag path or Franz Keller path down to Heubach town hall, always following the red triangle of HW1. It is worth noting that a large section of the newly created Heubach Archaeological Path from 2018, from "Große Scheuer" to "Kleine Scheuer," is identical to the RemsRosenstein path and offers several spots along the way providing details about the history of Heubach and Rosenstein.
