The route mostly runs through the forest and leads to the summit of the Rehberg. After the great Winterberg in northern Alsace, it is the second highest mountain of the Wasgau. The name has nothing to do with “roe deer”, but comes from Rhine Franconian and means “steep slope,” which is understandable because the distinctive mountain shape with comparatively high prominence is very well identifiable as an isolated peak. From there, you have a magnificent view over the Palatinate Forest to the Rhine Plain and, depending on the weather, views as far as the Black Forest, Odenwald, and the Vosges. Sunrises and sunsets here are especially impressive. Otherwise, we also visit the small Hahnenstein. A beautiful sandstone massif from whose summit one also has a nice long-distance view. To get all the way to the top requires some climbing, which should only be done by those experienced.
Path types: 35% trail, 35% natural paths, 30% gravel forest path. Orientation: no continuous trail marking. Locals need a GPS/map. Refreshments: Climbing hut at Asselstein: https://klettererhuette.de
Author’s recommendation
The Rehberg tower is a great photo spot for sunrises & sunsets over the Palatinate Forest….

The Asselstein, only 300 m away from the parking lot, is one of the most impressive free-standing sandstone massifs of the Palatinate. Definitely worth a visit…
