A loop trail with moderate inclines around the Rosental valley near Ranschbach
UFFBASSE! — Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
- Fire & Smoking - Making fires, smoking, and barbecuing are strictly prohibited in the forest and must be avoided at all costs! This is the only way to prevent fires and the resulting extensive damage to nature and wildlife.
- Nature Conservation – Stay on the marked trails and avoid making unnecessary noise when you’re out in nature. Leave the forest by dusk at the latest so as not to disturb the rhythm of nocturnal animals.
- Be Considerate While Out and About – Always be thoughtful, friendly, and considerate toward everyone you meet along the way. This is especially important on farm roads, where winemakers, farmers, and foresters work even on weekends.
- Picnics & Trash— Bring a trash bag with you and take your trash home with you. Use only the designated rest areas for breaks and picnics.
- Keep Dogs on a Leash—Please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will appreciate it.
We—your fellow visitors and nature—appreciate it!

In March and April, when the almond trees are in bloom, you should definitely take a short detour to the Palatinate Almond Grove near Ranschbach and Birkweiler to enjoy the sea of white and pink blossoms and the view—it’s also a great spot for a picnic!

Safety information
Hiking on nature trails and paths— Especially in the fall, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can hide uneven surfaces, roots, rocks, or holes in the path. Even after thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still topple or branches may fall. Especially in adverse weather conditions, nature trails can become muddy and slippery in certain sections. You should expect trail obstructions of this kind when you go hiking. If you feel that certain sections of the trail are impassable for you, you should bypass them. Despite the continuous trail markings, we always recommend carrying an appropriate hiking map for safety reasons, so that you can quickly find your way to a safe area in the event of a thunderstorm or an emergency, for example. Be sure to observe any trail closures and detours.Use of Farm Roads – Our tours through the vineyards often follow paths that we share with others. We therefore ask that you always be considerate and friendly toward others. Winemakers, farmers, and foresters use these farm roads through fields, forests, and vineyards for their daily work—even on weekends. Due to work activities and/or weather conditions, the paths may be particularly muddy at times. Special caution is also required when riding across roads in and around the Palatinate villages. Road closures and detours must be strictly observed.
Dangerous Situations— In the event of an emergency, quick assistance is essential. And even though cell phones can transmit GPS signals, the fastest response often comes from traditional emergency response points. These are located in spots that are easily accessible to emergency vehicles. Make a note of the locations marked with green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return to one of these locations and provide the number on the sign when you call 911. This way, emergency responders will know where to find you.

Roadbook
The trail continues into the forest and on to the next stop! You can refuel at the Kolpinghütte , where the menu features typical Palatinate delicacies. Be sure to check the opening hours before your trip, as some huts in the Palatinate Forest are only open on weekends or on specific days. Kids can let off some steam at the playground.
Now it’s back into the vineyards, past the “Tree of the Year” exhibit, and before you know it, you ’ll find yourself at the Zollstock . In the past, a trade route ran between the Hohenberg and Föhrlenberg. This is where the territories of the Electoral Palatinate (Birkweiler), the Diocese of Speyer (Ranschbach), and the Duchy of Zweibrücken converged, which is why a customs station was established here around 1786. After the French Revolution and the dissolution of these territories in 1789, the customs station was also closed. It’s definitely worth taking a short break here: either at the Woodstop shelter or in the chestnut-wood hammocks.
Following the edge of the forest, with frequent beautiful views of the Rosental valley, the trail markers now lead you to the Kaltenbrunn spring and the Lourdes Grotto. This pilgrimage site, which once included a church (now only the foundations remain), briefly gained a legendary reputation in the early 1980s as a miraculous spring, as the water here seemed to restore sight to the blind and enable the lame to walk. The influx of visitors was immense, but soon dried up when the spring had to be temporarily closed. Today, it is above all the tranquility that draws people to this sacred place.
Continuing along the edge of the forest, you’ll soon reach the picnic area at Kammertwingert and, from there, descend into the sea of vines and the Seligmacher vineyard. You’ll soon arrive back in the small wine-growing village and, passing by the Catholic Church of the Visitation of Mary, return to the starting point.
