History meets view. The Prussian Trail is a beautiful and varied hiking path with many fantastic views and boasts Burg Lichtenberg and the countless border stones as a great historical asset. Lots of nature, a fantastic and diverse landscape, and challenging ascents – the Prussian Trail has much to offer. If the approximately 28 km are too long, you have the option to shorten via the cycle and hiking path on the former railway line, the Fritz-Wunderlich-Weg. The northern route scores with the viewpoint Herzerberg and Burg Lichtenberg as highlights.
From the Scharzenborn Mill, the "shortcut route" turns left onto the Fritz-Wunderlich-Weg and from Ruthsweiler turns right on the "footpath to the castle" back to the starting point, Burg Lichtenberg.

General rule:
Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches may drop afterward. In adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or rails. Surefootedness is required in places. Expect such path impairments when hiking. If you consider certain sections impassable, you should avoid them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work or hunting parties on this platform. Still, there are situations where trails are closed and we might not have been informed. If you unexpectedly come across a path closure or detour, please observe the signs for your own safety.

Roadbook
The path starts at the first highlight: Just visiting Burg Lichtenberg is worth a trip alone. In the castle, you will find the Palatinate Musicians' Land Museum, the Palatinate Museum of Natural History (branch Burg Lichtenberg), and the Prehistoric Museum Geoskop. Also available are a modern youth hostel and the castle restaurant.
You can get married civilly and religiously at the castle and also celebrate there. There is a research workshop, special exhibitions, music events, and much more...
But - we want to hike. From the castle, the trail leads the first section on Burgstraße (northeast) about 300 meters downhill, before it turns right into the forest and continues along the "Prussian-Bavarian border" via a meadow path into the Kurzebach valley.
After about 350 meters on the paved road, we turn into a field path and follow the markings up to the forest edge.
Enjoying the view of Burg Lichtenberg and Thallichtenberg, the hiking trail continues along the forest edge to about 20 small panels that provide information about the native animal and plant species.
Now it goes steeply uphill to the Herzerberg, the highest point of the region.
At the top, we see the weather vane at the dragon ramp on Herzerberg. Not only is this the highest point of the trail, but Herzerberg is also the highest mountain in the Kusel district. The magnificent view is worth the effort of the climb. A great spot for a rest, with enough benches, and under the right weather conditions, you can also see hang gliders flying there.
Downhill, past an abandoned quarry, the L349 is crossed. About 200 meters behind the Schwarzenborner mill, we reach the "Fritz-Wunderlich-Weg," which leads us without significant climbs past Pfeffelbach to Ruthweiler below Burg Lichtenberg.
After the bridge, we turn right and follow the signposted "footpath to the castle," which leads back to the starting point of the hike, Burg Lichtenberg.
