Murbach abbey was among the most influential (and richest) of the Holy Roman Empire. Nestled deep in the Murbach valley, it was nonetheless vulnerable: invaded, destroyed, rebuilt, then gradually abandoned, it proudly displays its two rose sandstone towers. The circuit around the valley is a great opportunity to understand the importance of its location and admire the surrounding forest. Occasionally, there are beautiful views over the nearby Alsace plain.
Author’s recommendation
The Murbach abbey is well worth a visit at the end of the route. Don't miss it.

Before setting out, you must:
- Check the general and local weather, especially to ensure there are no storms
- Bring an IGN map, a compass or GPS, a guidebook, etc… Do not leave empty-handed!
- Inform a close person of your plan and contact them if plans change: departure and return times, number of participants with phone numbers, vehicles, parking
- Avoid going alone, use equipment suitable for the activity, a complete first aid kit, a survival blanket, etc…
- Protect yourself against ticks, which are numerous in the massif: use a repellent spray available at pharmacies, it’s effective.
- Memorize 112 (European emergency number to use in case of an accident to call for help)
