Vestiges d'une abbaye romane, à visiter sans hésitation.
Considérée comme l'un des grands chefs-d'œuvre de l'art roman rhénan, l'abbaye de Murbach fut fondée en 727 par le comte Eberhard d'Eguisheim, neveu de sainte Odile. L'évêque Pirmin, missionnaire qui fut canonisé par l'Eglise catholique romaine, aida à sa fondation et son organisation. Dans son roman "Le Nom de la rose", l'écrivain italien Umberto Eco mentionne cette abbaye comme un atelier de copie encore actif au XIVe siècle. Son histoire est riche de péripéties. Dévastée et restaurée plusieurs fois, elle ne put enrayer son déclin. Les moines la quittèrent au début du 18ème siècle. L'abbaye a été restaurée à plusieurs reprises au 19ème, puis au 20ème siècle, et classée au titre des Monuments historiques depuis 1841.
