In Val Fiorentina, a fascinating "archaeo-trek" excursion winds through magnificent landscapes to reach a mesolithic burial site.

At the bottom of the car park (1663 m), take the dirt track after the barrier that blocks vehicles from the road. Gradually moving uphill, you pass under the rocky wall of Monte Pelmo and cross a forest of larches and firs that thin out as you climb higher; you then pass by the Malga Fiorentina (1799 m) and reach the meadows that surround the Città di Fiume refuge (1917 m).

Just before the refuge, at the bend, take the dirt track on the right (signposted Mondeval-Passo Giau) that gradually rises between the pastures dotted with scattered rocks while Monte Pelmo lies behind, looming and solemn. You return at some points among the larches; ignore the path going up to the Col de La Puina and instead keep on the dirt track that leads gradually up to the open meadows of the Forcella de La Puina (2034 m) from where you can catch your first glimpse of the Antelao massif.

The track crosses a new wooded area moving downhill to reach the meadows of the Forcella Roan (1999 m) with a view of the gentle grassland that slopes towards Cortina d’Ampezzo. From here the path (signposted "Prendera") crosses wide panoramic pastures and climbs again until it reaches an area dotted with boulders, arriving at the buildings of the "Malga Prendera" (2148 m).

A steep climb (signposted Mondeval) leads to the now purely Dolomite environment of the Forcella di Col Dure (2293 m) and through a gradual cut across slopes to the panoramic Forcella Ambrizzola (2277 m) from which opens up the view of Croda da Lago, Cortina d 'Ampezzo and its mountains, from Antelao to Cristallo.

But now we turn our backs on this panorama to descend to the left towards the green plateau of Mondeval. The well-marked path points in the direction of the Giau Pass but at a certain point a sign indicates a deviation to the left along a small path (archaeological site sign) that leads down to the large erratic boulder (2158 m); for millennia, this has represented a shelter for hunters-pastors, including Valmo (the Mondeval Man) whose burial site was found here and whose belongings are today preserved at the Museum of Selva di Cadore.

The return journey follows the same route as the outward journey.

    Author’s recommendation

A must-visit destination is the Vittorino Cazzetta Museum in Selva di Cadore, to discover the oldest history of the Val Fiorentina amid the footsteps of dinosaurs from 220 million years ago and exceptional finds such as the burial site of Valmo, a hunter who lived 8 thousand years ago (www.museoselvadicadore.it).
