Princess Amalie Zephyrine of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen had the grounds around the secularized Augustinian Canonesses' Monastery Inzigkofen redesigned from 1815 onwards, inspired by Napoleonic landscape gardens. "Back to nature" was her principle for the wild-romantic Front Park, which fit into the natural, rugged, and steep rocky landscape of the meandering Danube. On the opposite side of the river, the Hermitage with the "Princely House" was created. The merits of the princess – especially for preserving the small principality – are still commemorated today by the Amalienfelsen. After her death in 1841, Hereditary Prince Karl Anton added the Back Park at Nickhof. With the "Devil's Bridge" built in 1843 over the Hell Gorge and the Grottos, he created a fairy-tale adventure garden. In the aftermath of the 1848/49 revolution, "every respectable person was permitted to stroll in the local grounds." The park became a cornerstone for the emerging tourism in the Upper Danube Valley but became overgrown due to lack of maintenance. With the newly laid premium hiking trail, old sight lines and paths were reopened – natural romanticism is returning.

    Roadbook

We start the circular hike at the entrance to the former Inzigkofen Monastery. Passing the Parkstüble on the left, the path leads us to the Monument for Prince Friedrich III, the favorite brother of Princess Amalie Zephyrine, and further along the lime avenue to the Amalienfelsen, a viewpoint high above the Danube bend between the Princely Park and the Hermitage. Both are connected by the suspension bridge inaugurated in March 2019. After descending, we walk briefly along the Danube with a view of the Amalienfelsen. It bears the inscription "In memory of Amalie Zephyrine 1841" in widely visible iron letters as well as the alliance coat of arms of the princess. The riverside path leads us to the "Adventure Bridge" over the Danube, which was deliberately designed as a swinging suspension bridge. On the extension of the premium hiking trail, a detour to the Hermitage is now worthwhile. To the left, a narrow path runs parallel to the Danube shore. Here we admire the towering Devil's Bridge on the opposite side above the "Hell", return to the suspension bridge and then turn left before it and climb up to the Hermitage with today's Meinrad Chapel. The former princely house gave way to today's war memorial. From the top of the surrounding hill, there is a wide view towards Laiz and the Amalienfelsen. After descending, we continue the circular route to the left and cross the railway line to Sigmaringen via the newly built pedestrian bridge. At the end of the parking lot, we cross the L277 and reach the premium trail again at the junction "Old Country Road". It leads to the viewpoint "Split Rock". From there, we look over the Danube to the Devil's Bridge in the Princely Park and then walk back 100 m and further north to the "Erratic Block", a glacial erratic from the Silvretta. The gneiss stone was transported to its current location by glaciers during the Ice Age. Between the waypoints "Scheererhau" and "Scheuerlebühl" we shorten the premium hiking trail and continue straight ahead for a detour to the magnificent viewpoints of the Danube bends with the Broken Gutenstein Ruin. Back at the fork "Scheuerlebühl", the Monastery Rock Trail leads down to the former Inzigkofen railway station and across the Danube. After the barbecue area on the Danube bank, an information board at "Inzigkofen Rock Roof" points out its archaeological significance. We then ascend in switchbacks along steep cliffs to the Rock Gate and up wooden stairs to the Grottos. The Känzele, a magnificent viewpoint over the Danube floodplains towards Beuron, invites you to linger. To the right, the path leads us through a rock gate to the Devil's Bridge over the Hell Gorge. It connects the Front with the Back Park at Nickhof. Then follows a viewpoint over the Danube with a view back to the Split Rock. Right uphill, the path leads us below the former monastery to the Parkstüble with beer garden. Also worth a visit are the monastery church, the farming and monastery museum, as well as the herb garden at today's adult education center.
