The loop trail takes you through the picturesque wine-growing village of Ilbesheim, past the Kalmitwingert, and through the vineyards ofthe “Ilbesheimer Kirchberg” and“Ilbesheimer Kalmit” sites, over the Kleine Kalmit, the highest point in the Rhine Rift Valley. Thanks to its location, you’ll enjoy a unique panoramic view of the Palatinate Forest and the German Wine Route during the tour. A detour up to the Mater Dolorosa Chapel is highly recommended.

UFFBASSE! – Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature

    • Be considerate on the trail— always act thoughtfully, kindly, and considerately toward everyone you meet along the way. This is especially important on farm roads, where winemakers, farmers, and foresters work even on weekends.
    • Picnics & Trash – Remember to bring a trash bag with you and take your trash home with you. Use only the designated rest areas with picnic tables for breaks and picnics.
    • Keep Dogs on a Leash—Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will appreciate it.

We—your fellow visitors and nature—appreciate it!

    Safety information

Use of Farm Roads— Our tours through the vineyards often take us along paths that we share with others. We therefore ask that you always be considerate and friendly toward others. Winegrowers, farmers, and foresters use these farm roads through fields, forests, and vineyards for their daily work—including on weekends. Due to work activities and/or weather conditions, the trails may be more muddy at times. Extra caution is also required when crossing roads in and around the Palatinate villages. Trail closures and detours must be strictly observed.

Dangerous Situations – Should an emergency arise, quick assistance is essential. And even though cell phones can transmit GPS signals, the traditional emergency points are often the fastest way to get help. These are located in places that are easily accessible to emergency vehicles. Make a note of the locations marked with green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return to one of these locations and provide the number on the sign when you call 911. This way, emergency responders will know where to find you.

    Roadbook

You’ll start at the alla Hopp! facility or elementary school in Ilbesheim and follow the brownish trail marker numbered 1, “Kleiner Kalmit-Weg.” It leads you out of town and straight into the vineyards. This brings you to the Kalmitwingert, a historic vineyard that showcases various vine training systems from antiquity to the modern era. Not only that, but here you’ll already be treated to a truly unique view across the vineyard landscape of the Southern Wine Route toward the Palatinate Forest—which, by the way, was voted “the most beautiful wine view in the Palatinate” by the German Wine Institute. Picnic tables in the shade invite you to stop for a snack.

The trail continues above the “Ilbesheimer Kirchberg” vineyard to the Unter den Linden rest area. If you’d like to walk further up to the Mater Dolorosa Chapel, you’ll need to turn off here and, after your visit, take the same path back to this point.

You’ll soon find yourself immersed in the“Ilbesheimer Kalmit” vineyard, which boasts a truly unique terroir thanks to its deposits of land snail limestone—a terroir that, incidentally, also supports rare pasqueflowers and various orchid species. The Kleine Kalmit is also a habitat for numerous rare species of spiders and butterflies and has been designated a nature reserve due to its unique flora and fauna.

Soon you’ll be back in town and will follow the trail markers along the Birnbach through the Parc De Chavot Courcourt back to the alla Hopp! park and your starting point. If you don’t feel like you’ve worked up a sweat yet, you can still do so at the alla Hopp! park.

    Equipment

Sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, sun and rain protection, and a sufficient supply of food and—above all—drinks should be packed in your backpack for every hike, as places to stop for refreshments or shop aren’t always available or open. Although the trail is marked throughout, for safety reasons you should always carry a suitable map or a hiking app.
