Our hiking tour follows in the footsteps of Simon Kramer, alias “Krapfenbäck Simale,” who was one of the most feared thieves in Carinthia during the Napoleonic era—though his story ended badly.
After many raids, the “Wolschart Robber” met his end in the parlor of the inn at Wegscheide during a surprise nighttime raid. We’ll fare better, for the wanderer’s reward will be the delicious dishes served here. The tour begins at St. Peter and Paul Church in the village of Hart and winds through mixed forests up to the Wegscheide, where Andrea Kogler conjures up hearty Carinthian delicacies on her wood-burning stove. Known by both names, the “Gasthof Wegscheide” or “Gasthof zum Simale” is a gathering spot not only for hikers—cyclists, day-trippers, and archers also meet here! On the way back toward Hart, your gaze will fall on the extensively renovated Liebenfels Castle. The fortified complex, featuring the tallest accessible medieval tower in Carinthia, has been opened to the public as a tourist destination in recent years. Reason enough to stop here for a break!
