The Harz is a low mountain range and the highest mountain range in northern Germany. The mountain range is 110 km long and 30 to 40 km wide and covers an area of 2,226 km², which extends within the Lower Saxony districts of Goslar and Osterode, the districts of Harz and Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt, and the Thuringian district of Nordhausen in the south. The mountain range is divided into the lower Unterharz with heights up to 400 m and the mostly forested Oberharz with heights up to 800 m. The Brocken, at 1,141 m above sea level, is the highest mountain in the Harz. Other significant elevations in the Harz are the Heinrichshöhe (1,044 m), the Königsberg (1,023 m), the Acker-Bruchberg range (927 m), the Achtermannshöhe (925 m), and the Wurmberg (971 m). Surrounding the mountain range is the extensive Harz foreland.Roadbook
