Der Brocken ist nicht nur der höchste, sondern zugleich einer der historisch bedeutendsten Berge Norddeutschlands. Mit seinen 1141 m ist er der höchste Berg im Harz und nicht nur durch Goethes Harzreise berühmt geworden, sondern auch als sagenhafter „Blocksberg”.

Beim Rundgang über den Brocken stechen bizarre Felsformationen aus Granit, die so genannten Wollsäcke, ins Auge. In der Walpurgisnacht sollen sich Hexen hier treffen und gemeinsam einen Tanz aufführen. Seit 1896 finden auf dem Brocken in der Walpurgisnacht „Hexenfeiern” statt.

Wer im Brockenhaus die Ausstellung betrachtet, der erkennt sehr schnell, dass der Brocken weit mehr als eine schöne Aussicht und Hexensagen zu bieten hat. Er hat eine bewegende Vergangenheit und spielte eine zentrale Rolle zur Zeit des Kalten Krieges. Nur noch wenige Stellen erinnern an die vergangene Zeit, die den Menschen im Grenzgebiet der DDR und der BRD aber immer im Gedächtnis bleiben wird.

Der Brocken kann nicht nur erwandert werden, sondern auch mit der Brockenbahn, einer Linie der Harzer Schmalspurbahnen, „erklommen” werden. Für Besucher, die weniger gut zu Fuß sind, bietet sich ein 1,5 km langer Rundweg auf dem Brockenplateau an. An- und Abreise werden mit der Bahn vorgenommen. Eine Einkehrmöglichkeit besteht mit der „Hexenklause”.

Der Brocken ist die einzige Erhebung im deutschen Mittelgebirgsraum, die eine natürliche Waldgrenze besitzt. Das extrem raue Klima und eine den Winden ausgesetzte exponierte Lage verhindern das Entstehen eines geschlossenen Waldes auf dem Plateau. Ab etwa 1100 m – je nach Exposition – beginnt auf dem Brocken die waldfreie Zone.
