Fall is the perfect time for hiking. Especially in Salten, with its magnificent, unobstructed views and the impressive colors of fall, a hike during this season is a must for every hiking enthusiast.
We start in the village of Hafling. The starting point is ideal, as there is a spacious parking lot and a public transportation stop here.
We cross the street and first take Trail No. 12, which leads uphill for a short stretch along a paved path. At the Steinerhof, the trail then heads back downhill. We cross the road and follow the Stoaner Pfrein trail across meadows and through the forest to the Pfeinerbach stream. Following the stream, we climb up to the Pfreinhof.
Here we’re treated to a perfect view of the famous little St. Kathrein Church. Botanists will also be delighted, as the farmer has planted various shrubs and trees along the fence that line the path.
We continue uphill before following Vöranerstraße. Finally, we turn left onto Trail No. 12a toward Knottnkino. At the saddle near the Lenkhof, there’s an option to take a short detour to the Knottnkino. However, we’ll save this viewpoint for another hike.
We continue on Trail No. 11, which leads through the forest toward the Leadner Alm. From there, we hike leisurely uphill on Trail No. 2A to the Wurzer Alm, which we reach after about half an hour.
In addition to a breathtaking panorama, the Wurzer Alm offers an ideal place to stop for a break with numerous culinary specialties. Here, we happily treat ourselves and refuel for the rest of the hike.
Well-fortified, we then hike back downhill on Forest Trail No. 2A until we reach a fork in the trail. There, we follow Trail No. 1, which leads us—at times steeply—down through the forest to the Sinichbach.
We then continue along the stream until we reach the Wasserfallweg trail No. 15c. We follow this trail to the Haflinger Waterfall. Following the signposted path, we descend the steps and can fully enjoy the impressive roar of the waterfall.
Afterward, the trail heads uphill again. We follow the old Almsteig trail upward and finally take Trail No. 2, which leads us back to our starting point in Hafling.
A varied fall hike with magnificent views, colorful forests, idyllic alpine pastures, and the impressive Haflinger Waterfall—a tour that’s especially enjoyable at this time of year.
Author’s recommendation
The Wurzer Alm is a real highlight of the tour. In addition to a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, hikers can look forward to a cozy stop for refreshments featuring delicious South Tyrolean specialties. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a well-deserved break and recharge your batteries for the rest of the hike.
The Wurzer Alm is also a worthwhile destination in winter: snow-covered landscapes, crisp mountain air, and breathtaking views make a snowshoe hike a special nature experience. It’s a place where exercise, enjoyment, and mountain romance come together perfectly.
