Where on earth is the mountain from which this block of stone fell? There isn’t one! The Ice Age glaciers brought it to this place over 18,000 years ago. During the Ice Age, the plateau glaciers reached an altitude of 2,300 m at their peak, in other words, 800 m above our heads! The block was left here when the glaciers retreated. Since this is a porphyry block, it hasn’t travelled too far. After all, today’s Merano/Meran is the limit of quartz porphyry’s range.
