The backswimmer is an aquatic insect (Notonectidae). It only ever swims on its back because it carries its supply of air on the ventral side of its abdomen. Despite this conspicuous and remarkable swimming position, it is a proficient swimmer. Its hind legs have swimming hairs, which automatically fan out as it swims. Backswimmers feed predatorily on small animals such as insects and tadpoles that either live in, or have fallen into, the water and they seize them with their short strong proboscis. The backswimmer is rightly also called the greater water boatman. It can also bite humans if we attempt to catch them. The effect of the bite is similar to a bee sting because of the poisonous saliva in the proboscis.
