On the easy circular hike from Grassau via the Hufnagelalm to the Hefteralm in the Chiemgau Alps, you do not climb any spectacular peaks but enjoy a beautiful view from the open meadows towards Achental and the opposite Hochgern (1748 m). Additionally, the hike near Marquartstein, thanks to its manageable altitude difference of 400 meters, is ideal for families with children. A lengthy break at the idyllic Hefteralm, as soon as it reopens, should not be missed: hungry stomachs are treated to cheese, buttermilk, bread, and smoked products – all homemade. Besides the alpine farmers, almost 70 dairy cows with their calves, horses, goats, and small animals like rabbits and chickens live here in summer at 930 meters elevation, which particularly delights young hikers. Another plus of the comfortable hike: The starting point is excellently reachable by bus and train.

    Author’s recommendation

On the way there or back, it is worth getting off at the bus stop at the Salz and Moor Museum: At the Salt Museum, you can discover the technical history of the brine pipeline from Reichenhall to Rosenheim, considered one of the world's first pipelines. The Moor Museum offers great insights into the life of the adjacent raised bog.

From the bus stop, head along the street towards Grassau and turn right at the edge of a meadow ("Oberdorfstraße", or signpost "Piesenhausen"). Now follow the paved path to an intersection. Here turn right again and continue on a wide track towards the forest (signpost "Grassauer Almen"). At the forest edge, follow the signposts to the left; the path gently ascends. At the next fork, keep to the left towards "Grassauer Almen" and cross a bridge. Immediately after, turn right and follow a steeper footpath uphill. You come across a wider path and follow it to the right. At the next junction, leave the wide path to the left (faded signpost "Grassauer Almen" or "Berggasthof Staffner Alm").

The path then becomes flatter again and meets a wide alpine road, which you follow to the right. In open terrain now, pass the first refreshment option, the Rachlalm, and after a gate continue straight towards "Hufnagel Alm, Hefter Alm". The route continues pleasantly flat to the Hufnagel Alm and past it on the right. Behind the hut, follow the signs "Hefter Alm, Rottau, Grassau". The path becomes a meadow trail before entering a forested area. There you reach a track leading left to the Hefter Alm.

After the refreshment stop, walk right past the bread oven, pass through a gate, and enter the forest again. At a cross path, turn right towards "Grassau". The path soon descends in a wide curve as a broad forest road until you reach the exposed Strehtrumpf farm. At its parking area, immediately turn left (signpost "Panoramaweg") over a pasture fence and follow the meadow path to another signpost. Here turn left into the forest. After some steps, reach a fork and take the right path towards Grassau. The forest path ends at the former mountain pool of Grassau, from where you return on a paved road to the starting point.
