The hike starts at Hannigalp above Grächen. The path leads through the forest southbound to the Furggen viewpoint. In the first part, you hike over exposed paths and ditches past the Stock to the Rote Biel above Eisten.

From the Rote Biel you descend through the larch forest down to Schweibbach. The path continues sideways and upwards to Lammugrabu. There you cross a huge scree field. According to legend, a dragon once gnawed on the mountain here and was banished by the people of Saas. Over the Schilt above Saas-Balen and the following Stafelälpji, you reach Senggbodu below the Spilboden (not on the route), which is said to be cursed.

After Senggbodu, you come through the larch forest onto a wide path that passes the Bä Rufalla and leads to Saas-Fee.

    Author’s recommendation

The Grächen high path is the seventh of nine stages of the Monte Rosa route, a high alpine circular hike around the Monte Rosa massif and the Mischabel range, which should only be undertaken by sure-footed nature lovers. The path is partially exposed but very well secured and offers magnificent views into the Saas Valley and of the imposing pyramid of the Bietschhorn.

    Safety information

    • Use of hiking trails and information on this website is at your own risk. Conditions on site may cause changes to the route.

    • Use only marked hiking trails and follow all signposts and instructions – for your own safety, to protect grazing animals, and without disturbing the peace of wildlife.

    • Be considerate towards other trail users and the landscape. Take your rubbish and other people’s rubbish with you.

    • Carry sun protection. UV rays at high altitudes can be very strong, even in cloudy weather.

    • Plan your hike carefully: consider the required fitness of all participants, weather forecasts, and seasonal dependencies.

    • Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly and without warning. Appropriate clothing and sufficient provisions (food and drink) are very important. Turn back early in bad weather.

    • Do not go onto glaciers without a mountain guide.

    • Observe warning signs indicating dangers.

    • Inform third parties about your route and, if possible, never go alone.

    • Pay attention to the opening times of the mountain lifts.
