A monastery built by the devil - a shameful blasphemy. The builder of Limburg tricked the devil into helping build Limburg Monastery by pretending to construct a tavern. When the devil realized the deception and wanted to smash the work with a rock, the abbot and monks called the Virgin Mary for help, who caused the rock to melt in the hand of the raging monster. The story is passed down in the legend of the Devil's Stone, which can also be hiked (route "Pfalz Pfade Weilach: Circular Route Devil's Stone - Kriemhildenstuhl"). In the Middle Ages, the Imperial regalia, the greatest treasure of the Holy Roman Empire, were said to be kept in the Benedictine Limburg Monastery. Here, the four Advent Sundays were established for the entire Christian West. You can also enjoy the atmosphere of the monastery ruins during a guided tour, at the operas, theaters, and concerts of the "Limburg-Sommer," or in the monastery garden of the restaurant.

UFFBASSE! - Campaign for respectful cooperation in nature

    • Always behave considerately, kindly, and thoughtfully towards everyone you meet on your way.
    • Respect nature, do not destroy plants, and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.
    • Remember to bring a garbage bag for the way and take your rubbish home with you.
    • Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
    • Observe all trail closures, even on weekends, for your own safety.
    • Park only in designated parking areas. Keep space clear for emergency vehicles and agricultural machinery.
    • Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.

    Safety information

Please leave the signposting hanging for the next hikers! You can get it for only €2.50 at the Tourist Information Bad Dürkheim.

    General notes:

Especially in autumn, be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches may drop later. In adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Sure-footedness is required in places. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you think certain sections of the path are not passable for you, you should bypass them.

    NOTE:

We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work or hunting groups on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a path closure or detour, please follow the instructions for your own safety.

From the Brunnenhalle, we follow the signposts "Gottesburg and Devil's Work: Circular Route Monastery Ruins Limburg" and reach Römerplatz via St. Ludwig Church and Ludwigsplatz. Passing the town square, we enter Römerstraße. There you can visit the city museum with information about Limburg and the city's history. Via Strauchelgasse, Leininger Straße, and Limburgstraße, we go past the main cemetery up Limburgstraße and then half-right into Luitpoldweg. After a few hundred meters, we turn left onto an uphill forest path with views of the Limburg monastery ruins. After visiting the ruins, we descend the steps through the sculpture garden. (Caution: slippery in autumn/winter due to damp leaves!) Via Friedrich-Ebert-Straße and Bürgermeister-Kropp-Straße, we pass through the underpass beneath the Pfalz Museum of Natural History onto a path along the Isenach river and B37 and follow it to the roundabout. Then cross the street, turn left into Gerberstraße, and return via Weinstraße Nord and Kurbrunnenstraße.

    Equipment

We recommend the following standard equipment for our hikes:

    • Sturdy footwear
    • Clothing adapted to the weather
    • Sun and rain protection
    • A sufficient supply of food and drinks, as there are not always places to eat or shop available or open.
    • Although the paths are very well marked throughout, for safety reasons it is advisable to always carry an appropriate hiking map so that, for example, in case of a thunderstorm or emergency, you can quickly find a safe area.
