Fuchsberg and Beinumer Forest
The hike goes from Salzgitter-Bad to Salzgitter-Engerode and back, winding through the Beinumer Forest around the Fuchsberg in the eastern Salzgitter mountain range.
The hiking trail is designed as a round trip. Since the trail cannot be depicted exactly as it is on the digital map, please pay close attention to the signage in the forest. A one-way trip is about 4.5 km long, so the round trip totals over 9 km. In the past, an alternative route was offered for the return trip, but it has become overgrown. Please stay on the ridge trail. The hike takes you through a unique forest area that has been given its own section in the Salzgitter Nature Atlas: Section 4, Fuchsberg and Beinumer Forest. Here, the influences of mining and agriculture on the landscape become evident. Striking contrasts between deciduous and coniferous forests are clearly visible in adjacent sections. On this hike, be sure to take in the unique flora and fauna along the trail. At the end of this easy route—that is, at the turnaround point of the hike—you’ll find not only the cemetery in Engerode but also a playground with benches where you can take a break.
Author’s recommendation
In Engerode, it’s worth making a detour to visit the historically significant St. Mary’s Church (by appointment!) or to buy fruit spread.

The Salzgitter Nature Atlas provides important information about the flora and fauna along the trail in Section 4, “Fuchsberg / Beinumer Forest.”
Roadbook
From the parking lot, the marked Trail No. 19 leads into the forest for about 750 m along the Fuchsbach; then the trail climbs steeply to the right up to the ridge trail (CAUTION: this section is very muddy after rain). Continue slightly to the left on a forest path—which is narrow in places—through mixed woodland, following the signs to Salzgitter-Engerode. Return via the same route. This hiking trail can therefore also be started from Salzgitter-Engerode. There is a parking area here at the cemetery on the street “An der Hannoverschen Treue.”
