Frankenwald
BREATHING WIDE - Accompanied by meadows and farmers tending their fields, our FrankenwaldSteigla Flaserkalk path leads you for long stretches through rural idyll.
Breathing wide - Deep valleys, bright clearings, plateaus with surprising views: hiking in the Frankenwald opens unexpected horizons for eyes and soul! In the face of nature’s grandeur, our everyday fears and worries become insignificant and small. We breathe wide and find ourselves.
Accompanied by meadows and farmers tending their fields, our FrankenwaldSteigla Flaserkalk path leads you for long stretches through rural idyll. It is not uncommon for hikers to find their way through freshly mown meadows. The view over the open, peaceful countryside is largely unobstructed.
The starting point and center of our circular route show a different picture, as busy activities have left their marks here. In 1832 Bad Steben became a Royal Bavarian Spa, and to this day people come here seeking relaxation - don’t miss trying the healing waters in the Kurpark, many swear by its effects!
About halfway through the hike, we come to the former turnoff to the geotope: in the quarry near Horwagen, Flaserkalk was mined until the 1990s and sold worldwide for floors, facades, altars, as well as clock cases and artworks. The stone, colored in a lively network pattern, was known in advertising as "German Red Marble", although geologically it is a limestone.
!!! Unfortunately, the geotope, now privately owned, is no longer accessible!!!

From our hiking signboard at the station, we walk through the market town of Bad Steben towards the Kurpark and Kurhaus. We leave the spa on our right, cross Steinbacher Straße and follow Berliner Straße. After about 250 meters we turn left into the small park which we walk through. We cross Geroldsgrüner Straße and keep left in the deciduous forest, the "Hemplabühl". We come to a seating area with a wonderful view of Bad Steben. After circling the forest area, we follow the path over meadows and fields straight ahead to the connecting road Geroldsgrün – Bad Steben. Along this stretch we have a splendid view over the eastern Frankenwald towards the Fichtelgebirge. We leave the district road after about 100 meters to the left and walk on a field path through an open, beautiful landscape heading south. After crossing the road again we reach Untergerlas. At the hiking lodge of the local group Bobengrün of the Frankenwaldverein, the "Old Forest House", we take a break. Unfortunately, the hiking lodge is not permanently managed; overnight accommodations are available. From here our hiking trail steadily climbs. It first leads through fields and then into a larger forest area. After crossing forest paths, our trail reaches a forest road, which we later leave downhill to the left via US 44 (Spitzberg trail). Those who want can make a detour straight ahead after about 30 meters to the top of Spitzberg (729 meters). Back on the trail, we always walk downhill, follow a small path and cross the road.
Passing the sports grounds of ATS Bobengrün, we reach Bobengrün where the path turns right along the Lohbach. After some changes of direction in the village, we leave it heading north. Over meadows and fields we reach Thierbach. We leave the village to the right and cross the district road Bad Steben – Thierbach. Passing a farmstead on the right and going over the hill, we already see Bad Steben in front of us. Passing the Sinkteich and crossing Stebenbach, we reach the railway line Bad Steben – Hof. Shortly to the left, then over the level crossing to the right through the deciduous forest to the hilltop, we enjoy beautiful views. Our next destination is Dörflas. Here we cross the road Lichtenberg – Bad Steben and walk on the field path to the junction where we keep left in the direction of Bad Steben. At the entrance to Bad Steben we turn left, walk through the town and reach our end point at the station again. A landscape-wise beautiful and varied hike comes to an end.
Now we can recover from the exertion with a visit to the spa.
