Erfenstein - from the spur castle Spangenberg to the Hellerhütte
Günther Weinert
The municipality of Erfenstein and this route offer you 3 highlights!
- Spangenberg Castle. You can find detailed information here:
https://www.burg-spangenberg.de/burg.html
- Hellerhütte. Further information, e.g. about opening hours, can be found at the following links:
https://www.pfalz-info.com/neustadt-an-der-weinstrasse/hellerhuette-31947/
- Kuckucksbähnel. For a day trip, it is interesting to know that Erfenstein has a stop for this historic railway. Link:

- ... and with this route you come from the Sandwiesenweiher to the Kalmit:
Author’s recommendation
Looking for rocks? Then I recommend these two routes:
- Rodalben - partial hike of the northern Rodalber rock hiking trail
-
Lindelbrunn - from the Lindelbrunn ruin to Dimbach with the rock landscapes Immersberg, Dimberg and Rötzenberg
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.

Are you interested in castles? The routes "Erlenbach/Dahn - Berwartstein and Drachenfels" and "Nothweiler - 4 castles and 1 mine" are interesting. Link:

Roadbook
I would like to point out again that between the two highlights you walk on wide forest roads and narrow paths that have no significant landmarks.
This is the route:
- Follow the Palatinate Forest hiking trail (white-green rectangle) from the Spangenberg hiking car park over the castle to the junction where the Alte Weinweg meets the Gernsweg. There is also a nice shelter there (see picture in the gallery).
- On the Gernsweg, follow the Palatinate Forest hiking trail (white-red-white rectangle) to the Hellerhütte (2.2 km).
- From the Hellerhütte, return to the starting point via the Palatinate Forest hiking trail (white-red rectangle) or the circular route 2 (black 2 on a white disc).
Alternative route extension: You can also hike to the Totenkopfhütte, then wander through the sea of rocks and finally ascend to the Kalmit! See the map in the gallery for this. Also beautiful!
